Mercy Mercy – Live At Caesars Palace

LP (Item 80524) World Pacific, Late 60s — Condition: Used
Gatefold
(€- || £- || ¥-) (approx.)

Buddy at his soulful late 60s best – not content to keep in the same groove as older years, and working here with a great lineup that includes some excellent younger players! Charles Owens is in the group on alto, and the set also features work by Don Menza on tenor, Art Pepper on alto, Pat Labarbera on tenor, and Walter Namuth on guitar. Tracks are long, include some good originals, and have a rollicking sound that never lets up – and which avoids cliche a lot more than you'd think! Titles include "Ode To Billie Joe", "Acid Truth", "Goodbye Yesterday", "Preach & Teach", "Channel 1 Suite", and "Big Mama Cass". (Cover has light wear & some splitting.)  © 1996-2017, Dusty Groove, Inc.

We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Verve, 1956. Very Good
A lively little set done strongly in a Basie mode – as you might guess from the title! Buddy's on drums, but the real maestro here is Marty Paich – who handled the arrangements, and most likely brought together the batch of west coast jazzers who inhabit the group – including ... Verve, 1956. Very Good
One of the few rare vocal sessions recorded by Buddy Rich – and a surprisingly swinging album that makes us wonder why he didn't record more like this! Arrangements are by Buddy Bregman, who was always the great man at Verve for backing less-confident singers – and unlike other Buddy ... LP, Vinyl record album
New One!
Pacific Jazz, 1967. Near Mint- Gatefold
Very hard-burning work from Buddy's hip band of the mid 60s – a large ensemble, but one that features searing horn parts that cut through the bigger arrangements with ease! Buddy really had an ear for tuning power with personality at this point in his career – and although the group ... LP, Vinyl record album
Roar Of '74
Groove Merchant, 1973. Near Mint-
One of the funkiest Buddy Rich albums of the 70s – a mad screaming affair that's overflowing with great tunes! The band on the set is very full – with a heck of a lot of trumpets in the brass section, set next to searing sax work by the great Pat LaBarbera. But even better is the ... LP, Vinyl record album
RCA, 1977. Near Mint-
A surprisingly great one from Buddy – full of live, liveliness, and energy – but also coming across with a depth that goes beyond simple Rich big band sounds. The album was handled by producer Norman Schwartz, and looks like it was originally recorded for his Gryphon label, but ... LP, Vinyl record album

Argo, 1960. Near Mint-
An obscure early 60s date from Buddy Rich – recorded with a very unusual group of musicians! Big Swing Face
Pacific Jazz, Late 60s. Very Good+ Gatefold
Although Buddy's always been a bit laughable, he was always trying to keep his bag moving, and his band of the late 60s included some pretty darn nice players. The group on this session includes Ernie Watts and Bobby Shew, and the band wails hard and fast in a live setting with lots of tight ... LP, Vinyl record album
Buddy & Soul
Pacific Jazz, 1969. Very Good+ Gatefold
Groovy stuff! We'd normally never say a bad word about Buddy (or else he'd sock us one!), but this album is particularly nice – as it features Rich's swinging late 60s group doing some pop/jazz covers of groovy 60s tunes, plus some very tasty originals! All tracks are pretty short, and the ... LP, Vinyl record album
Ain't That A Groove
World Pacific, Mid 60s. Very Good
One of the greatest records ever cut by organist Billy Larkin – a lean, mean batch of soul jazz instrumentals, recorded with the Delegates combo, featuring tenor work by a young Fats Theus! The tracks are short tight jazz dancers – with a mixture of stepping grooves and some more full ... LP, Vinyl record album
World Pacific, Early 60s. Near Mint-
A strange batch of titles played by one of the stranger groups of the late 50s, but the record works nicely – possibly because Rodgers & Hammerstein's tracks are a good forum for the group's mix of soul jazz and lyrical mysticism. Monk Montgomery plays an early Fender bass, Buddy ... LP, Vinyl record album
World Pacific, Late 50s. Near Mint-
The last session that The Mastersounds ever cut as a group – and a strangely compelling montage of tracks from the musical Kismet.
