God Bless The Child

LP (Item 80340) Columbia, Late 30s/Early 40s — Condition: Very Good-
2LP Gatefold
A classic 2LP collection of Billie's older work for Columbia – early sides produced by John Hammond in the late 30s and early 40s. Titles include "It's A Sin To Tell A Lie", "Am I Blue", "God Bless The Child", "Mandy Is Two", "It's The Same Old Story", "I Hear Music", "I'm In A Low Down Groove", "Love Me Or Leave Me", "Gloomy Sunday", and "Until The Real Thing Comes Along".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good - (minus)

  • Vinyl may be dirty, and can lack a fair amount of luster.
  • Vinyl can have a number of marks, either in clusters or smaller amounts, but deeper.
  • This is the kind of record that you'd buy to play, but not because it looked that great. Still, the flaws should be mostly cosmetic, with nothing too deep that would ruin the overall record.
  • Examples include a record that has been kept for a while in a cover without the paper sleeve, or heavily played by a previous owner and has some marks across the surface. The record should play okay, though probably with surface noise.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Billie Holiday

Lady Sings the Blues
Verve, 1956. Near Mint-
Possibly one of the most essential Billie Holiday albums for Verve – a set that carries the same title as her famous autobiography, and which also features many key numbers from her songbook at the time! The feel here is quite easygoing and relaxed – with small group backing behind ... LP, Vinyl record album

Billie Holiday

Songs & Conversations
Paramount, Early 50s. Very Good+
An incredible record from Billie Holiday – and not really a proper sort of "album" at all! Instead, the set features the posthumous release of tapes from sessions recorded with pianist Jimmy Rowles and bassist Artie Shapiro – tracks that feature Billie singing in a looser ... Billie Holiday

All Or Nothing At All
Verve, Mid 50s. Very Good+
Beautiful Billie from the last years of her life. The material was recorded in 1956 and 1957 in Hollywood, featuring Barney Kessel, Ben Wesbster, Harry Edison, and Jimmy Rowles – all grooving nicely in small group formation. The tracks have a wonderfully fragile quality – and although ... LP, Vinyl record album

A very unusual concert from Billie Holiday – one that features narration by Gilbert Millstein, telling the story of Billie's life! Carol Sloane

Out Of The Blue
Columbia, 1961. Very Good-
A beautiful little record from singer Carol Sloane – a singer who's billed as a discovery from the Newport Jazz Festival – but who sings here with shimmeringly modern arrangements that recall some of June Christy's best 50s work with arranger Pete Rugolo!
