Best Of Argo Jazz

LP (Item 802052) Argo, 1960s — Condition: Near Mint-
Features work by Ahmad Jamal, Benny Golson & Art Farmer Jazztet, Al Grey, Lorez Alexandria, Buddy Rich, James Moody, Roland Kirk, and others!  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Grey label pressing. Cover has some ring and edge wear, wide center split in the bottom seam, and is yellowed from age with a small blemish spot in back.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Ahmad Jamal

Happy Moods
Argo, 1960. Very Good
A sprightly set from the Ahmad Jamal Trio – but also a record that's not as brightly colored as you might guess from the title, thanks to a nice undercurrent of darkness in the mix! Jamal's piano work is often nicely punctuated – perhaps living up to the "happy moods" ... LP, Vinyl record album

Buck Clarke Quintet

Drum Sum
Argo, 1960. Very Good+
One of Buck Clarke's fantastic albums from the early sixties, featuring Mr. C himself on conga, with accompaniment by the incredible lost jazz player Charles Hampton, who not only plays piano, sax, and flute with a really dark edge, but also lays down some amazing compositions and arrangements. ... Art Farmer/Benny Golson

Meet The Jazztet
Argo, 1960. Very Good+
Landmark work by one of the greatest jazz outfits of the early 60s! A screamin' set of organ tracks by the legendary Baby Face Willette – one of the best organists of the early 60s, with a sound that's a lot madder than most! This album's one of two that Baby Face cut for Argo Records in Chicago – and it's a firey trio session with Baby Face wailin' ... LP, Vinyl record album
Argo, 1958. Very Good+
Ramsey and the trio are on the front in tuxedoes, top hats, and tails – but the overall sound of the record is much more in keeping with their soul jazz grooves of the late 50s – not necessarily gentlemanly, but with a worldly appreciation for a variety of styles of music, and perhaps a ... JC Heard

This Is Me
Argo, 1958. Very Good+
A cracker of an album from JC Heard – a rare small group outing from the drummer who mostly worked with bigger groups in the 50s – and a real chance for JC to show off a different side of his talents! The setting here is relatively small and relaxed – with players that include ... LP, Vinyl record album

James Moody

Great Day
Argo, 1963. Very Good
Way more than just a James Moody album – a true proof of his genius in the 60s! McCoy Tyner

Fly With The Wind
Milestone, 1976. Near Mint- Gatefold
Don't be put off by the late date of the session, because this is an excellent album from McCoy Tyner – and one with a very spiritual groove that's clearly inherited from Coltrane! The album's based around longer compositions arranged by Tyner, and orchestrated by the great William S Fischer ... LP, Vinyl record album
