Rebirth Cycle

LP (Item 8001) 3rd Street, 1977 — Condition: Very Good+

Obscure set of 70's soul jazz tracks, recorded by percussionist Mtume, with a host of great like-minded performers, including Stanley Cowell, Cecil McBee, Billy Hart, Leroy Jenkins, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Jean Carn, and Buster Williams. The sound is similar to some of the Carlos Garnett or Norman Connors albums from the early 70's, and has an approach that's very much in the Strata East mode. Tracks are long, with lots of righteous phrasing and full, progressive rhythm – and titles include "Sais", "Yebo", "Umoja", and "Body Sounds".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has some edge wear.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Gabor Szabo

Spellbinder
Impulse, 1966. Very Good Gatefold
Breezy brilliance from the legendary Gabor Szabo – and one of the grooviest albums the Hungarian guitarist recorded during the 60s! The set's almost a tightening up of the style that Szabo first brought to prominence in his work with Chico Hamilton – a sound that's got roots in gypsy ... LP, Vinyl record album

Grant Green

Visions
Blue Note, 1971. Good+
A wicked late Blue Note album from Grant Green – quite different than his smaller combo work from the early years, and done with some great larger arrangements that feature some ultra-hip vibes from the legendary Billy Wooten! Wooten's as great here as on his famous work with the Ninteenth ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sam Rivers

Waves
Tomato, 1978/1989. Near Mint-
Fairly loft-oriented jazz session from Sam Rivers – but with a more focused approach than you might initially imagine. Thurman Barker creates a great rhythmic foundation alongside longtime Rivers collaborator Dave Holland on bass, and Joe Daley adds another dimension to the tonal palette ... LP, Vinyl record album

Weather Report

Sweetnighter
Columbia, 1973. Near Mint-
One of our favorite albums ever from Weather Report – an album that has them picking up a bit more soul than before, and shaking off some of the experimental sounds of their roots – yet all in a way that still makes them one of the most revolutionary fusion combos of the time! Sonny Rollins Vol 2
Blue Note, 1957. Near Mint-

Buddy Tate

Tate-A-Tate
Swingville/Prestige, 1960. Very Good-
A tightly swinging set that makes wonderful use of the tenor sax of Buddy Tate – recorded in a swing-based mode that's very much in the same spirit Verve was using with players of his vintage, but in a style that's slightly rougher around the edges! The whole thing's got a nicely echoing ... LP, Vinyl record album

Enrico Rava

Pilgrim & The Stars
ECM, 1975. Very Good+
One of Enrico Rava's more over-the-top albums – recorded with a full-on trumpet sound that reminds us a bit of Freddie Hubbard in early CTI years, set into some harder jamming post-Miles arrangements! The backing is by a John Abercrombie on guitar, Palle Danielsoon on bass, and Jon ... LP, Vinyl record album
Riverside, 1957. Near Mint-
Hmmm . . . Don't know what the "difference" is here, given that the set was one of a number of Duke-inspired sessions of the late 50s, but given that Terry was a big force in the best ones, and that he's working here with some of Duke's best players, we'll give the set a thumbs up! The ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gerald Wilson

Eternal Equinox
World Pacific, Late 60s. Very Good+ Gatefold
One of Gerald Wilson's hippest albums for World Pacific – and all of them are pretty darn hip! This set is one of Gerald's last for the label – cut in a run of very successful, and very strong big band soul jazz albums that brought together the cream of the crop of the LA underground. ... Tom Scott

Intimate Strangers
Columbia, 1978. Very Good
Sweet funky jazz from the great Tom Scott – an album that's recorded a bit later than some of his beathead classics, a great one nonetheless!
