Whisper Not

LP (Item 79953) Verve, 1966 — Condition: Near Mint-
A groovier batch of tunes than usual for Ella – especially compared to most of her Verve recordings! Ella's getting backed here by Marty Paich and orchestra – in a mid 60s swinging mode that has a nice degree of kick to it, and which shows that Ella's able to groove like some of the other singers of the decade. And sure, the whole thing gets a bit cheesy at times – but in a good way that has Ella breaking from the staidness of her "songbook" sessions. Titles include "Old MacDonald", "Matchmaker", "Wives & Lovers", "Lover Man", "I've Got Your Number", and "Whisper Not".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Ella In London
Pablo, 1974. Near Mint-
Something groovy always happens to Ella Fitzgerald in London – and in the 60s and 70s, the city became home to some of her best post-Verve recordings! Verve, 1958. Very Good+
A nice one from Ella – and a good move past the Songbooks mode that sometimes dogged her years on Verve a bit too much! Blossom Dearie

Once Upon A Summertime
Verve, 1958. Near Mint-
A really fantastic album from the young Blossom Dearie – and in a way, a record that kind of sets the tone for all the greatness to come in future recordings! Here, Blossom is already breaking from standard jazz vocal modes – using some of the hipness she'd picked up in France to ... LP, Vinyl record album

Lovesick
Verve, Mid 60s. Near Mint- Gatefold
Wonderfully groovy work from the team of Jackie Cain & Roy Kral – a set that has the pair moving into much hipper modes for the 60s, and really taking off from the greatness of earlier records! Backing is still by Roy's core trio, with acoustic piano at the lead – but the addition ... LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, 1959. Near Mint-
Very cool work from Anita O'Day – a session cut with Jimmy Giuffre arrangements, in a style that's a bit different than some of her other 50s work for Verve! Anita Sings The Most
Verve, 1957. Very Good
Anita sings it swinging and simple – working with a smallish combo to back her up, and vocalizing in a relatively uncluttered style that's in keeping with her best mode at Verve! The tunes are mostly standards, sung in a way that bridges swing and later styles of jazz vocalization – no ... LP, Vinyl record album
