Berlin Concerts – 1966

LP (Item 797493) Relyable (Italy), 1966 — Condition: Near Mint-

Rare live work – recorded in Germany in 1966 – with Donald Ayler on trumpet, Michel Sampson on violin, Bill Folwell on bass, and Beaver Harris on drums! Titles include "Alpha", "AC", "Ghosts", "Bells", "Jesus", and "Omega".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Albert Ayler

Bells/Prophecy
ESP (Italy), 1965. Near Mint- 2LP
A double-length set that brings together 2 key early live sets by Albert Ayler – both recorded on the New York scene of the mid 60s! Bells was an unusual one-sided record that featured only 20 minutes of music, performed with an intensity that hardly leaves room for complaints about the ... LP, Vinyl record album
Freedom/Polydor (UK), 1964/1975. Near Mint- Gatefold
Classic early material by Albert Ayler, recorded in New York in 1964, but originally issued only in Europe! Freedom/Trio (Japan), 1965. Near Mint-
A key early album by Albert Ayler – a mindblowing record even all these many years later, and a key introduction of Ayler's music to the rest of the world! The set begins with a compelling spoken introduction from Albert – really taking the time to introduce himself and his new ... LP, Vinyl record album
Shandar (France), 1971. Near Mint- Gatefold
Fantastic late work from Albert Ayler! The record is one of the last he ever recorded – and it's a no-nonsense live set, without any of the silly influences of some of his late Impulse sides. Most of the material features Ayler blowing long free solos, with a tightness and directness ... LP, Vinyl record album
Impulse, Late 60s. Very Good 2LP Gatefold
A great collection of Ayler's late work for Impulse – some of his most unusual sides ever cut to wax, and very different from his work on labels like ESP. The general feel is one of searching – as Ayler works in a number of different modes to try to reach new audiences, and hit new ... LP, Vinyl record album

Roland Kirk

Volunteered Slavery
Atlantic, 1969. Very Good+
Our favorite album ever from Roland Kirk – and a beautiful mix of two different sides of his genius! Side one's got Roland doing these crazy takes on late 60's pop cuts like "My Cherie Amour" and "Say a Little Prayer", plus his own "songs", done with soulful ... LP, Vinyl record album
AVA, 1963. Very Good+
One of the few records ever cut by bassist Ben Tucker – known to most as the composer of 60s jazz hit "Comin' Home Baby", which was riding very high in the charts at the time of this session! The album's a very rhythmic one – with Ben in the lead on bass, working with a combo ... LP, Vinyl record album

John Coltrane

Ballads
Impulse, 1962. Very Good+ Gatefold
A perennial favorite in the John Coltrane catalog – a beautiful set of standards, handled in a warm laidback style – one that shows that Trane's groundbreaking group with Jimmy Garrison on bass, Elvin Jones on drums, and McCoy Tyner on piano could still express themselves with even more ... Ray Bryant

Lonesome Traveler
Cadet, 1966. Very Good+
An excellent example of the massive groove that Ray Bryant set up during his 60s years at Cadet – a simple soul jazz trio style, but augmented with dual horn backing – which makes for a tightly stepping sound that's all-soulful, all the way! Bryant's left hand is nice and hard on the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bobby Bryant

Swahili Strut
Cadet, Late 60s. Very Good+
An excellent bit of funky stuff from LA trumpeter Bobby Bryant. The set was recorded for Cadet in LA, features tight arangements by Bryant, and a lot of nice long cuts that have a bit more of a groove than some of his other recordings (although most of them are pretty great). Tracks include " ... LP, Vinyl record album
