Here, though, Bud's nicely out front – blowing alto and a bit of flute, in his own tight combo with Claude Williamson on piano, Chuck Flores on drums, and Don Prell on bass – a group who can work with just the right shadings of modernism, but also keep things straight ahead – in that mode that the Pacific Jazz label captured so well.
