We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Next Plateau, 1989. Near Mint-
A seminal bit of soul from a key transitional moment! During most of the mid to late 80s, American soul was losing a lot of its edge, especially in production terms. Then, from out of nowhere, Sybil came and dropped the bomb – a righteous new sound that took a lot of classic elements, and ... 12-inch, Vinyl record
Salsoul, 1980. Very Good+
Recorded after he left Roy Ayers' group, and with a different feel than the stuff he did in the early 70's, this track is Edwin Birdsong's big funk hit, and a tough one to find, too! The cut's got a snapping groove that's in a tight rollerskate funk mode – very nice all the way through, and ... 12-inch, Vinyl record

"Don't Make Me Over" was an instant classic the day it was written by Burt Bacharach way back in the 60s – but Sybil's version from 1989 has always been one of our favorites, picking up on the natural syncopation of the song to that great Soul II Soul Nu Groove that was her ... 12-inch, Vinyl record

Great solo work by Chaka – a killer reading of Ashford & Simpson's "Clouds" – produced with a sweet modern groove by the great Arif Mardin! 12-inch, Vinyl record

Genius, pure genius – Trevor Horn's transformation of the overcluttered Yes groove down into a lean, mean bit of bass and funk for the 80s! The whole thing snaps, crackles, and vamps along magnificently – a blueprint for Art Of Noise, and countless other groups to come! The remix is ... 12-inch, Vinyl record

Think what you want about the Pet Shop Boys, this tune's still got a simple charm that we love – one of the last gasps of early 80s British pop seeping into American club – and a nicely spoken lyric that still beats out most of what was going on in US pop at the time! 12-inch, Vinyl record
Mirage, 1982. Very Good+
A great bit of crossover dancefloor – and the one standout hit from The System! "In My System" has a groove that's electric and soulful at the same time – nicely percolated and a bit compressed – served up with a hook that won't quit! "Now I Am Electric" is a ... 12-inch, Vinyl record

A totally excellent indie soul number with an insistent 80s groove vibe aimed straight at the mainstream dancefloor. 12-inch, Vinyl record
Motown, 1975. Very Good
A rare 12" single with one of Willie Hutch's greatest tracks! The driving funky groove of "Brothers Gonna Work It Out" was one of the best things about the film The Mack – and the cut's been a classic for years with just about everyone, from funk fans, to hip hoppers, to early ... 12-inch, Vinyl record
