Magic Of Love

CD

✈
Spiritual work from the great Charles Moffett and his talented family – all of whom have matured nicely by the time of this recording! Gone is the sloppiness of some of the earlier Moffett Family albums, and in its place is a tight soulful groove – with a progressive soul jazz sound that reminds us of the best moments on the Strata East label during the 70s! Charnett Moffett's on bass, Charles plays alto and tenor, Mondre plays trumpet, Codaryl's on drums, Charisse sings on two tracks, and Charles Sr. plays some nice vibes along with his usual drums. Tracks include "Mandingo Warrior", "Magic Of Love", "Short Stuff", and "The Gift Is Love".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We only use the grade "Used CD" for non-new CDs. This all-encompassing grade was chosen it because we only buy and offer used CDs in the best possible condition.

When you purchase a used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use, but if there are significant details or defects we will describe the item's condition (just like we do with LPs), so look for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details before ordering.

All of our used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. After you receive a used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly. If it does not, you can request a return for a full refund.

My Foolish Heart
Venus (Japan), 2002. Used
Scott Hamilton and Eddie Higgins are a pretty great pair together – as you'll hear on this recent date for Japan's Venus Records! Hamilton's got a lot of tradition in his horn, and Higgins a fair bit in his piano too – although Eddie's way of shaping a tune is also very much his own ... CD

Eric Alexander

Gentle Ballads
Venus (Japan), 2004. Used
A long-overdue session of ballads from modern tenor giant Eric Alexander – a player we've always loved for his soaring, leaping lines on soul jazz sets – but who also has just the right tone to carry off an album of mellow tunes and ballads! Alexander's tone reminds us a lot of the ... CD

Eric Alexander

Gentle Ballads 2
Venus (Japan), 2006. Used
The ballads are gentle, but the music is great – played in a strongly classic style on the tenor by the great Eric Alexander, all at a level that's much higher than you'd guess from the cheesy nudie image on the cover! The album's a great follow up to Alexander's first session on this vein ... CD

Mellow magic from pianist Eddie Higgins – one of those players whose work seems to get even better with age – deepened a lot more in feeling than on his earlier records, and recorded beautifully by the folks at Venus Records! The album's heavy on ballads, but also features a few subtle ... CD

There's a bit of reverie here, but it's usually the swinging kind instead of the sleepy variety – thanks to a well-formed groove from Richie Beirach on piano, George Mraz on bass, and Billy Hart on drums! The tunes certainly include a few ballads, but Richie usually takes them with a freely ... CD
