Collaboration

LP (Item 79404) Atlantic, 1964 — Condition: Very Good+

Moody vibes and light guitar – a wonderful meeting of two unique talents – the third stream jazz of the Modern Jazz Quartet, and the introspective guitar of Laurindo Almeida! The session blends together a host of different influences – from classical guitar to bossa nova to modern jazz – all with the light and spacious touches of the MJQ at their best, recorded with some really warm brilliance that makes the whole set sparkle! Titles include "Foi A Saudade", "One Note Samba", "Fugue In A Minor", "Silver", "Trieste", and "Concierto De Arajunez".  © 1996-2021, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Red & green label Rockefeller pressing. Cover has light wear.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Art Ensemble Of Chicago

Fanfare For The Warriors
Atlantic, 1974. Near Mint-
A beautiful little record from the Art Ensemble of Chicago – and although performed for a bigger label than some of their previous indie outings, the set may be one of the most dynamic the group ever recorded! Atlantic Records is clearly giving the group a lot of space here – as they're ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ahmad Jamal

Crystal
Atlantic, 1987. Near Mint-
A new age title, but a great straight-ahead set from Ahmad Jamal – played with all the fluidity of his many years in jazz! The cover image might be a bit misleading, and make you think there's something space age or electric about the record – but Jamal's on an acoustic Steinway ... LP, Vinyl record album
Atlantic, 1965. Very Good+
A surprisingly great album from Herbie Mann – especially considering that it's based around a Broadway score! The set goes way beyond the source of the tunes, though – and Herbie's combo makes some great groovy magic out of the music – often with some sweet Latin touches, as you'd ... LP, Vinyl record album

Charles Mingus

Changes Two
Atlantic, 1975. Near Mint-
A great little 70s session from Mingus – the second part of the Changes set, some of his best work from the time, and recorded with a small group that includes George Adams, Don Pullen, and Jack Walrath. Tracks are long, with that late love of Ellington that Mingus was developing – and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sonny Fortune

Infinity Is
Atlantic, 1978. Sealed
A beautiful set from Sonny Fortune – a bit smoother than some of his earlier work, but still with a deeply soulful finish that keeps the album fresh throughout! Nearly every track was written (or co-written) by Larry Willis, who plays piano and Fender Rhodes on the set, and really feels like ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jazz Modes

Jazz Modes
Atlantic, 1959. Very Good+
One of the rarest albums by this fantastic combo from the late 50s! The band features the very strange mix of French horn, tenor, and soulful piano – played by Julius Watkins, Charlie Rouse, and Gildo Mahones, respectively. The sound shouldn't work, but it does, and beautifully – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dave Brubeck

All The Things We Are
Atlantic, 1976. Near Mint-
One of the best Dave Brubeck albums from later years – and one of the hippest! The record is noteworthy for its pairing of Anthony Braxton and Lee Konitz – the former a rising star at the time, influenced strongly by the latter in his roots – showcased here in some rare moments ... Herbie Mann

Hold On, I'm Comin'
Atlantic, 1973. Near Mint- Gatefold
Great early 70s work from Herbie Mann! By this point in his career, Herbie must have had a fleet of cars, a harem of ladies, and a golden flute. You can hear his success in the live material that makes up the album – recorded before very enthusiastic audiences at the New York and Montreux ... LP, Vinyl record album

John Coltrane

Coltrane Plays The Blues
Atlantic, 1960. Sealed
Coltrane plays the blues, but in a way like nobody else – stepping off of the deeply soulful sound of his late Prestige years, and moving into even more open and exploratory space for Atlantic! The setting is bare bones and simple – and many of these numbers begin with the sort of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Miles Davis

On The Corner
Columbia, 1972. Near Mint-
A sublime bit of Miles Davis electric funk – one of the best-remembered electric sets from the 70s, and for good reason too! The tracks are long, the jams are hard, and the whole thing has a lot more funk than some of the noise you'd get on other Miles albums of the time – thanks to ... LP, Vinyl record album
Arista, 1975. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
One of the most striking Ornette Coleman albums of the 60s – a set that came together because of an odd regulation, but which also resulted in some really wonderful music as well! The record documents a 1965 London concert by Ornette – but, in order to get a visa to visit the UK, ... LP, Vinyl record album
