Collaboration

LP (Item 79404) Atlantic, 1964 — Condition: Very Good

Moody vibes and light guitar – a wonderful meeting of two unique talents – the third stream jazz of the Modern Jazz Quartet, and the introspective guitar of Laurindo Almeida! The session blends together a host of different influences – from classical guitar to bossa nova to modern jazz – all with the light and spacious touches of the MJQ at their best, recorded with some really warm brilliance that makes the whole set sparkle! Titles include "Foi A Saudade", "One Note Samba", "Fugue In A Minor", "Silver", "Trieste", and "Concierto De Arajunez".  © 1996-2021, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Red & purple label pressing. Cover is nice!)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Modern Jazz Quartet

Lonely Woman
Atlantic, 1962. Sealed
Truly one of the Modern Jazz Quartet's greatest albums – and a set that has an edge and a darkness that's missing from some of their other Atlantic records! Part of the reason for this may be the group's fantastic reading of Ornette Coleman's "Lonely Woman" – a killer moody ... LP, Vinyl record album

Atlantic, 1966. Very Good
Herbie Mann got a standing ovation for this performance – at least if the title is to be believed – and considering the grooves on the set, it was all for very good reason! The album's one of the few to feature Mann in the company of pianist Chick Corea – who steps out here with ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jazz Gunn
Atlantic, 1967. Sealed
Shelly Manne scored big with a jazz version of the Peter Gunn soundtrack in the 50s – and he does it again in this 60s version of Henry Mancini's music for the full-length Gunn movie! Atlantic, 1976. Very Good+
A very interesting album from Eddie Harris – one that's more of a comedy album than a jazz record – honest! Most of the record features Eddie performing his own comedy material – pretty blue stuff with lots of bad-rapping and profanity – possibly trying to cash in on the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Duke Ellington

Great Paris Concert
Atlantic, 1963. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
Did Ellington ever record in concert and it not be great? This wonderful double-length set from the 60s is key proof of his genius in an unfettered live setting – recorded in Paris in 1963 with plenty of dark edges! Bright Moments
Atlantic, 1973. Sealed 2LP Gatefold
Great double album live set with Roland leading a tight group through a long and varied set of material, all of which showcases the odd goofy sound of his music, and his offbeat approach to more familiar tracks. In Motion
Decca, Mid 60s. Very Good+
A stunning little set from the Quartette Tres Bien – a sweet 60s group who were every bit as groovy as the Ramsey Lewis Trio, but never fully got their due!
