Chicken/I Love You

7-inch, Vinyl record

❔

Ooooo-weeeee! After serving up "The Duck", a northern soul classic, Jackie moves onto "The Chicken" – which is a stone funky single of its own! The track's got a massive groove – really heavy drums, super-dope wah wah guitar, and a snapping funky style that's more James Brown than the JBs! A real killer of a track – and backed here by the also-nice "I Love You", a cut with a nice trippy bassline on the intro!  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Plays with some noise on "I Love You".)

Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl may be dirty, or have one outstanding flaw, such as a light residue, which could be difficult to clean.
  • May have marks on all parts, too many to qualify as Very Good-, or several deeper marks, but the record should still be ok for play without skips.
  • In general, this is a record that was played a fair amount, and handled without care. A typical example may be a record which has been heavily played by a DJ, and carries marks from slip cueing. Depending on the quality of the vinyl, may play with surface noise throughout.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

One of the Young-Holt group's greatest tracks! "Wack Wack" is a stunning little jazzy groover – heavy left hand on the piano, with acoustic bass bouncing along on the groove, all very catchy, and with shouted vocals over the top! A classic! "Mr Big Stuff" is Jean's enduring classic – a tight little groover with a hip feminist message, sampled by Schoolly D and others over the years, but equally wonderful on its own! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Some of the more obscure material from Jackie's Chicago years, recorded with Sonny Sanders arrangements, and production by Carl Davis. "I Don't Want To Lose" is a nice loping groover, of the sort that Gene Chandler could handle quite nicely at the same time. The flipside's a bit more ... 7-inch, Vinyl record

Old school break party in action! From the first note of "The Breakdown", you know you've picked yourself a winner – the kind of funky Rufus Thomas tune that set so many beatheads going back in the mid 80s, and which has none of the hokey sound of some of his weaker work. The Count takes on some 60s soul numbers – and the results are great! "Green Onions" is done here with piano instead of organ – over a slow-stepping, very sly groove that's got a real Soul Cargo sort of feel! "Hang On Sloopy" has almost a Ramsey Lewis groove at ... 7-inch, Vinyl record
