The first-ever album from Henry Mancini – and a wonderfully spooky set! The style here is quite different than most of Hank's better-known film work and instrumental hits – as the record is very moody and laidback – cut with a slow-moving, dreamy sort of darkness that's really compelling! The instrumentation is very unusual – a mix of organ, accordion, and guitar by Laurindo Almeida – all stepped gently along with some spare electric bass bits by Bob Bain, who really knows how to preserve a sense of space in the set. There's a bit of wordless vocals from the lovely Lulu Jean Norman – almost in modes that would show up later in Italian soundtracks – and although there's a bit of an exotica feel to the record, it's very slight, given the lack of any percussion or drums – and instead comes off with a very spooky dream-like quality. Titles include "Bali Hai", "Poinciana", "The Whispering Sea", "Ebb Tide", and "The Naked Sea". (Rainbow label pressing.)  © 1996-2015, Dusty Groove, Inc.

We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Mancini's Angels
RCA, 1977. Near Mint-
Happy Hank surrounded by plenty of cleavage – a cover that's perfect for the album's title play on the hit Charlie's Angels show! One of the funkiest albums ever from Henry Mancini – a brilliant reworking of hit 70s cop show themes, put together with a really jazzy groove! A set that has Garrett's guitar-based groove hitting a host of exotic themes – familiar south sea standards from the mid-century generation, but recorded here with a really cool sound overall! A/S, 1970. Near Mint- Gatefold
Breathy, sexy pop stuff from 101 Strings, featuring a nice remake of "Je T'Aime...Moi, Non Plus", with vocals by Bebe Bardon. Sexy gatefold package, too, and very different than their other records. More of a sexy easy pop sound than usual, with covers of "This Guy's In Love With ... LP, Vinyl record album

One of the few fantastic records that Percy Faith cut in the 70s, and one with a groove that's very different than his earlier sleepier albums! Pretty darn groovy stuff from Dick Hyman, and a record that has him getting some great tones out of the Baldwin organ! In fact, he seems to use his experience with the moog to find new ways of playing the organ, so that some of the tones and sounds have more of a moogy feel than you'd expect. The ... Well, the cover's got a wonderful image of a sexy witch holding a snake and skull above a cauldron – but the music's pretty mellow, in kind of a lush orchestral instrumental sort of way.
