Pot, Spoon, Pipe, & Jug – 14 Jazz Vocals & Reefer Songs

LP (Item 785825) Stash, Late 20s/1930s/Early 40s — Condition: Near Mint-

Think music only got blunted with hip hop? Think again – as these pre-war tunes are filled with drug references! Includes work from Champion Jack Dupree, Hazel Meyers, Slim & Slam, Lil Green, Blue Lu Barker, Sam Price, and others!  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Bo Diddley

His Greatest Sides
Chess, Late 50s. Near Mint-
Raw, ragged, rough, and ready – killer early work by Bo Diddley, clearly in a class by itself! The Bo Diddley groove isn't blues, isn't soul, and isn't R&B – it's instead a mad blend of rhythm, scratchy guitar, and spontaneously playful vocals that few other singers could ever hope ... Big Mama Thornton

In Europe
Arhoolie, 1965. Near Mint-
Big Mama Thornton may well be best-remembered as the woman who gave the world "Hound Dog" – which later catapulted Elvis to fame – but over the years she continued to be a hell of a singer, with a rich legacy of music that more than stands on its own! Witness this mid 60s ... LP, Vinyl record album

Memphis Slim

Real Folk Blues
Chess, 1950s/Early 60s. Very Good+
Memphis Slim's installment in this excellent LP series from Chess – 60s packagings of earlier recordings done by key bluesmen in the Chicago scene, with slightly improved fidelity but enough of the "real folk blues" sound to warrant the title! Instrumentation here is a bit more ... LP, Vinyl record album

Junior Wells

Southside Blues Jam
Delmark, 1969/1970. Very Good+
An incredible slice of Chicago blues – and maybe one of the most important contributions Delmark ever made to the Windy City scene! The album captures Junior Wells in all his rough and raw brilliance – working in territory that's quite similar to the Chess Records vibe of the early 60s ... LP, Vinyl record album

RL Burnside

Sounds Machine Groove
Sutro Park, 1979/1980. Near Mint-
Early work from RL Burnside – Mississippi country blues, recorded by David Evans during a few trips to Memphis in 1979 and 1980 – and pretty monumental stuff overall! The sides are billed as the first-ever recordings of RL playing electric guitar – and also the first non-solo ... LP, Vinyl record album
ABC/MCA, 1973. Very Good+
A set that has BB King teaming up with southern soul maestro Dave Crawford – an arranger/producer who helps BB find a whole new groove! Mose In Your Ear
Atlantic, 1972. Near Mint-
It's the early 70s, and Mose is still going strong – grooving with a unique blend of New Orleans soul and Northern jazz influences, his own particular brand of music, timeless from the day it was born! The setting here is a live one, and Mose is playing with a trio that includes Clyde ... LP, Vinyl record album

Esther Phillips

Confessin' The Blues
Atlantic, 1976. Near Mint-
A 70s album, issued at a time when Esther Phillips was really riding high with her records on the Kudo label – but a set that brings together unissued sides recorded for Atlantic in the 60s! The style is a great mix of rootsy soul and hipper jazz – arranged by Onzy Matthews on side one ... LP, Vinyl record album
