Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Contemporary, 1957. Good
One of Art Pepper's classic recordings, in which he plays with a spare quartet backing by Miles Davis' rhythm section at the time – Paul Chambers, Red Garland, and Philly Joe Jones. An essential East meets West jazz recording, with Art at the top of his game, playing in a unique setting for ... LP, Vinyl record album
Contemporary, 1987. Near Mint-
An unexpected treasure – like so many of Art Farmer's later albums! The record is ostensibly a tribute to the music of Billy Strayhorn – which might make us expect some soporific Ellington cliches – but the session's really just a small group one, played by Art with a quintet ... Frank Morgan with Cedar Walton

Easy Living
Contemporary, 1985. Near Mint-
A great date from the later revival years of altoist Frank Morgan – thanks to a warm performance from the Cedar Walton trio! One of the great things about late Morgan is the way in which he's able to really fit himself into different settings – still holding onto his soulful roots, but ... LP, Vinyl record album

Howard Rumsey's Lighthouse All Stars Vol 4 (10 inch LP)
Contemporary, 1956. Very Good+
Sheesh, Howard Rumsey sure knew how to stick his name on a lot of records! (He must have been trying to give Norman Granz and Leonard Feather a run for their money!) Fortunately, most of them were also great – like this one, which features flute duets between Bob Cooper and either Bud Shank ... LP, Vinyl record album

Pal Joey
Contemporary, 1957. Very Good-
Surprisingly nice stuff – especially considering that the album was one in a string of Previn piano sessions for Contemporary – all based around Broadway themes as part of the success of his My Fair Lady date with Shelly Manne! Contemporary, 1954. Very Good
Tremendous work from Howard Rumsey's early Lighthouse group – and a great example of why they were such a great act at the time! The "solo spotlight" in the title is extremely apt here – as each of the album's tracks features a standout performance by group members who emerge ... LP, Vinyl record album

Betwixt & Between
A&M, 1969. Very Good+ Gatefold
A great album of smooth jazzy numbers recorded for CTI – with a nice luster that actually makes the album a lot more compelling than some of JJ and Kai's other work together. The album features some great big band arrangements of strong material, including Edu Lobo's "Casa Forte" ... LP, Vinyl record album

Verve, 1963. Very Good+ Gatefold
A landmark record – both in 60s jazz and bossa nova – and a set that not only bridged worlds of music, but set the tone for so many other albums to come! By the time of this 1964 set, Stan Getz had already issued a few bossa nova experiments on Verve – but this pairing with ... LP, Vinyl record album
