Waiting For Little Milton

LP (Item 78245) Stax, 1973 — Condition: Very Good+
No waiting here – as Little Milton's guitar is plenty sweet throughout – making the album a key cooker from his classic years on Stax! The album's an essential effort in the shift between grittier urban blues and some of the tighter, more warmed up sounds that played big in the 70s – hardly a commercial move at all, but a nice step up to a new maturity in the genre, which King definitely helped to forge. Tracks include the uptempo funked up numbers "It's Amazing" and "Woman You Don't Have To Be So Cold" – and Milton does a sort of take off on Isaac Hayes with the longer "That's How Strong Love Is" on side 2 which opens with a lengthy monologue and is filled it out by more lush string laden production and backing vocals from the Soul Children. Other tracks include "What It Is", "Little Blue Bird", and "The Thrill Is Gone".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Little Milton

If Walls Could Talk
Checker, 1969. Near Mint-
A great example of why Little Milton was always one of the few Chicago blues artists who could also break strongly in the soul camp at the time – and a beautifully balanced set that perfectly shows both sides of the Chicago scene of the time! Production is by old Vee Jay maestro Calvin ... LP, Vinyl record album

Little Milton

We're Gonna Make It
Checker, 1965. Very Good+
A classic Chicago crossover of blues and soul – a wonderful album from Little Milton, and one that's cut with some of the same sophisticated overtones as work by Bobby "Blue" Bland at the time! The backings here are superb – arranged by Phil Wright and James Carter with a ... LP, Vinyl record album
Checker, 1966. Very Good+
Big blues from Little Milton, recorded with a mighty big sound as well – thanks to the cool criss-crossing of soul and blues that was going down at Chess Records in the 60s! Milton's got this raw, raspy style in his voice – a nasty edge that mixes perfectly with his own sharp guitar ... LP, Vinyl record album

Junior Wells

Junior Wells On Tap
Delmark, 1974. Near Mint-
Junior Wells was already a rising star when he cut this album for Delmark in the mid 70s – but the session's got a great back to basics vibe, one that's dedicated to Junior's home turf at Theresa's Tavern on the south side! The groove is great – with twin guitar work, by Sammy Lawhorn ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bo Diddley

His Greatest Sides
Chess, Late 50s. Near Mint-
Raw, ragged, rough, and ready – killer early work by Bo Diddley, clearly in a class by itself! The Bo Diddley groove isn't blues, isn't soul, and isn't R&B – it's instead a mad blend of rhythm, scratchy guitar, and spontaneously playful vocals that few other singers could ever hope ... Mississippi, Late 60s/Early 70s/Early 90s. Near Mint-
A great mix of vintage and later work from Abner Jay – a unique one man band in the best rural blues tradition of the south – and who, like some of the best, doesn't ever use his multi-instrument talent as a gimmick! Instead, Jay works here in a mode that's like a stripped-down combo, ... LP, Vinyl record album
Atlantic, Late 50s. Near Mint-
A really well-titled album, given that Joe Turner was a key force in the birth of rock and roll in the 50s – not to mention a strong link between jazz, soul, and R&B as well! At the time of these recordings, Turner was already a relatively old singer – at least compared to some of ... LP, Vinyl record album

James & Bobby Purify

Pure Sound Of The Purifys
Bell, Late 60s. Very Good+
James & Bobby were one of the classic male soul duos of the 60s – and this album of tight tracks is right up there with similar work by Sam & Dave, Bob & Earl, and Mel & Tim. The album doesn't include their big hit "I'm Your Puppet", but it does have a lot of other ... LP, Vinyl record album

Herbie Mann & Tamiko Jones

Mann & A Woman
Atlantic, 1966. Very Good+
A really unique collaboration between fluteman Herbie Mann and soul singer Tamiko Jones – a vocalist who's always a really special talent, and who has an equally great ear for jazz as well! That style works perfectly here – as the vibe is somewhere between Herbie's Latin and Brazilian-s ... LP, Vinyl record album
