Captain Blued

LP (Item 777219) Greene Street, 1983 — Condition: Near Mint-

With Phil Woods on alto sax, Albert Dailey on piano, Harvie Swartz on bass, Akira Tana on drums, and Ted Moore on percussion.  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Pharoah Sanders

Love Will Find A Way
Arista, 1978. Very Good-
A beautiful little record by Pharoah Sanders – quite different than most of his other recordings of the 70s, and done in a smoothly jazzy mode that also features plenty of soul! Sanders did the set in collaboration with Norman Connors – and the style is in that same great mix of mellow ... LP, Vinyl record album

Richard Williams

New Horn In Town
Candid, Early 60s. Very Good
A brilliant session of modernist hardbop – one of the few records ever cut as a leader by trumpeter Richard Williams! Williams was a key part of the Charles Mingus group for a few years – and his soulful approach ranks with Ted Curson as some of the most compelling underground trumpet ... LP, Vinyl record album
American Clave, 1987. Very Good
A pretty interesting album – one in which a host of jazz and rock players pay set music to texts written by consciousness-raiser/sci-fi author Ishmael Reed. There's a few goofy moments on the set, but if you've read Reed's work, you'll also know that goofiness and oddity are part of the ... LP, Vinyl record album

George Wallington

Knight Music
Atlantic, Late 50s. Very Good+
Great work from bop legend George Wallington – one of the last records in an initial run of 50s strengths from the pianist – and a set that features some great original compositions of his own! The set's a bit unusual for Atlantic Records at the time – almost more of a Prestige ... LP, Vinyl record album

Tom Browne

Love Approach
GRP/Arista, 1980. Very Good
An early gem from trumpeter Tom Browne – a set that not only firmly established Browne as one of the best young players of his generation, but which also paved the way for a whole new direction for jazz funk in the 80s! The record is a perfect example of how great the mix of R&B rhythms ... LP, Vinyl record album

Kenny Dorham

Jazz Contemporary
Time, 1960. Very Good
Great work from one of the hippest jazz contemporaries of the late 60s – trumpeter Kenny Dorham, a player who was really coming into his own by the time of this album! The record has Kenny with a nice sort of edge – not as boldly experimental as his 60s work for Blue Note, but ... LP, Vinyl record album

Idris Muhammad

Boogie To The Top
Kudu, 1977. Very Good
Classic middle period work from drummer Idris Muhammad – a set recorded after his initial run of lean funk recordings for the jazz scene – with a bit more soul in the mix, and definitely a bit of boogie in the groove! Arrangements are by David Matthews – the maestro of the soul-st ... LP, Vinyl record album

Hubert Laws

Morning Star
CTI, 1972. Very Good Gatefold
One of the most sublime Hubert Laws albums for CTI – a set that features his incredibly soulful flute work floating over these beautiful large arrangements by Don Sebesky – all ticked by some sweet electric piano from Bob James! The sound is perfect – that balance of soul and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Stylistics

Stylistics
Avco, 1971. Very Good-
A masterpiece of harmony soul – one of THE all-time greats of the genre, and a lasting treasure from The Stylistics! The album really took vocal soul to a whole new level for the 70s – pushing from the sometimes fragile ballad style of the late 60s into a smoother, more mature sound ... LP, Vinyl record album
Mercury, 1974. Very Good
A seminal set from The Joneses – and a record that really set a whole new style for soul vocal groups in the 70s! The group soar into new heights with some of the growing sophistication of the east coast scene – bits of strings, tighter charts, and some cool pre-disco grooves – ... LP, Vinyl record album
Liberty, 1957. Very Good
The first-ever album from Henry Mancini – and a wonderfully spooky set! The style here is quite different than most of Hank's better-known film work and instrumental hits – as the record is very moody and laidback – cut with a slow-moving, dreamy sort of darkness that's really ... Greatest Hits
Westbound, 1975. Very Good Gatefold
Great gatefold compilation of their funky Westbound tracks, with such faves as "Pain", "Walt's First Trip", "Funky Worm", "Varee is Love", "Climax", and more. Slightly different track listing than the "Best of the Early Years" comp, and ... LP, Vinyl record album
