Sonny Rollins (2LP)

LP (Item 77697) Prestige, Mid 50s — Condition: Very Good+
2LP Gatefold
A bit different than the usual Prestige Records two-fer of this type – as the collection brings together tracks from a variety of different sessions by Sonny Rollins – instead of just combining two full LPs! Rollins recorded for Prestige in a variety of formats during the 50s, and this collection offers up a good deal of them – including work with the MaxRoach/Clifford Brown group, collaborations with the Red Garland Trio and the Modern Jazz Quartet, and numbers recorded with Thelonious Monk, Art Blakey, Kenny Dorham, Elmo Hope, and others. The double-length package features 13 tracks in all – including "St Thomas", "The Way You Look Tonight", "Tenor Madness", "Valse Hot", "Count Your Blessings", "Mambo Bounce", "Newk's Fadeaway" and "No Moe".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

RCA/Camden, 1964. Near Mint-
A killer album from Sonny Rollins' prime 60s years at RCA – almost a return to basics, but always with that edge that makes Rollins stand out way more than most of his contemporaries – a subtle balance between straight and modern that really makes the album crackle! The album features ... LP, Vinyl record album
Prestige, Mid 50s. Near Mint-
Nice album that contains a mid-50s session recorded by Rollins for Prestige – with a quintet that includes the Clifford Brown-Max Roach ensemble, with Rollins filling in the tenor spot. Richie Powell's on piano, and the whole group has a very tight "roots of hardbop" sort of sound. ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sonny Rollins

Worktime (second cover)
Prestige, 1955. Very Good+
If worktime was like this for us, you'd catch us showing up on the job early every day – but sadly, nothing at our office can match the brilliance of early Sonny Rollins here – a sharp-edged genius that perfectly illustrates why he was one of the greatest players on his horn for many ... Vintage Sessions
Prestige, Mid 50s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
Early Rollins work for Prestige – recorded between 1951 and 1954, in a variety of settings! Like a lot of the other Milestone 2LP sets issued in the 70s, this album collects tracks from a number of sessions, restoring recordings to the order they were recorded in rather than how they were ... Contemporary, 1958. Near Mint-
One of Sonny's brilliant west coast sessions for Contemporary – records that shouldn't sparkle as much as they do, but which actually stand with his best work of the 50s! Sonny's blowing in front of a session of "leaders" that includes Hampton Hawes, Barney Kessel, Leroy Vinnegar, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Moving Out
Prestige, 1954. Very Good-
Key recordings from Sonny's breakout year of 1954 – tracks from 2 different sessions, brought together into one album that packs a hell of a punch! The modernist Rollins tenor is at its early peak here – fresh, bold, and highly creative – yet equally concerned with the role of ... LP, Vinyl record album
Impulse, 1965. Very Good+ Gatefold
A tremendous little album from Sonny Rollins – one of his most sharp-edged sessions of the mid 60s, and a bold departure from some of his previous work for RCA! The album has a crackling sense of energy that more than lives up to the exclamation point in the title – a starker quality ... LP, Vinyl record album

George Wallington

George Wallington Trios
Prestige, Early 50s. Near Mint-
This is the kind of killer bop piano stuff that made Wallington a legend early on – collecting classic trios originally recorded for release as 10" LP in the early days of Prestige! The material features Wallington in three different groups, featuring Max Roach on drums, and either ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gene Ammons

Boss Is Back!
Prestige, 1969. Very Good
A great comeback for tenor legend Gene Ammons – not just in a musical sense, but also because Jug had spent most of the past few years in prison – as part of the usual trumped-up drug charges that were filed against musicians at the time! At the time of this album, Ammons had not ... LP, Vinyl record album

Roland Kirk with Jack McDuff

Funk Underneath (aka Kirk's Work)
Prestige, 1966. Very Good+
A strange and tasty little album that Roland Kirk made with organist Jack McDuff in the early 60s – one of his few outings in such a format, and a smoking little session that almost makes us wish he'd cut more of them! The format is relatively simple – with lots of interplay between ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gene Ammons & Dexter Gordon

Chase
Prestige, 1971. Very Good
Gritty live work from twin tenor giants Gene Ammons and Dexter Gordon – recorded in an open-ended style that's a bit like some of Gordon's famous early work on the Central Avenue scene in LA, or Ammons' famous live "battles" with Sonny Stitt! The date was recorded in Chicago at the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Kenny Burrell & John Coltrane

Kenny Burrell & John Coltrane
Prestige, 1958. Near Mint-
One of our favorite Kenny Burrell albums – and a record with a much deeper feel than lots of his other work! Kenny cut this album with John Coltrane in 1958 – and the session's a real standout in both of their careers at the time – Kenny's, for being a well-crafted, highly-focused ...
