Bluesoul Belles – The Complete Calla, Port, & Roulette Recordings

CD (Item 775887) Stateside/EMI (UK), Late 60s — Condition: Used
$14.99 ...

Sublime 60s soul – and a motherlode of rare work by 2 singers that we totally love! Betty Lavette's one of those voices who's finally getting her due after all these years – a great singer who recorded some incredible work for a variety of labels over the years – and who steps out here with some genius early sides for the Calla label! Unlike some of Betty's later work, the style here has a mix of deep soul vocals and uptown production – done in a sparkling style that's very true to Betty's roots, but which also brings in a nice bit of swing to the best tunes on the set. Carol Fran's a singer in a similar mode, and even better represented on this set – with a total of 16 tunes done for the Port and Roulette labels – in modes that range from Memphis soul to bluesy ballads, and some more upbeat Northern-styled numbers. Both singers get extensive coverage in the great notes on the set – and the CD features 24 tracks in all – including "Let Me Down Easy", "What I Don't Know", "Stand Up Like A Man", "She Don't Love You", "I Feel Good All Over", and "I'm Just A Fool For You" by Betty Lavette; plus "A World Without You", "My Runaway Heart", "I Know", "I'm Gonna Try", "Roll With The Punches", "C'Mon Let's Make Up", "Just A Letter", "Any Day Love Walks In", and "I Was Such A Fool" by Carol Fran.  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible.

When you purchase a Used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use but if there are significant details or defects we will list them underneath the item — just like we do with LPs — so look there for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details.

All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

Hi Records perfection from the mighty Al Green – slightly later than some of his key early hits, but a record that shows Green still taking fire on all burners! Production is by the team of Al and Willie Mitchell – in a mode that's slightly fuller and more updated than before, but ... CD

Hard to go wrong with Al Green at this point – 1973, when the mighty one was at the height of his secular soul powers – and when the sweetly compressed production style of Willie Mitchell just couldn't miss! There's a homey, earthy feel to the record that's really great – a sound ... CD
