Very Tall

LP (Item 77559) Verve, 1961 — Condition: Near Mint-
Gatefold

Milt Jackson joins the Oscar Peterson Trio – helping the group to hit some great new space with his magical work on vibes! Jackson's got an open, airy feel – an approach that almost lets Peterson punctuate the tunes a bit more with his piano – while the pair get strong rhythmic support from the bass of Ray Brown and lyrical drums of Ed Thigpen. Tunes are open and relaxed, letting Milt hit some great mellow tones – and titles include "Green Dolphin Street", "Heartstrings", "The Work Song", "John Brown's Body", "A Wonderful Guy" and "Reunion Blues".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Japanese Polygram pressing, UMV 2062. Cover has an import sticker on front)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Oscar Peterson & Milt Jackson

Two Of The Few
Pablo, 1983. Sealed
Two of the few, and nobody else – a set of duets between pianist Oscar Peterson and vibist Milt Jackson – recorded here in a really stripped-down setting, especially for the date! Both players bring a really classic feel to their style here – almost making the date feel like some ... LP, Vinyl record album

Cal Tjader

Warm Wave
Verve, Mid 60s. Very Good+ Gatefold
Warm mellow moody vibes from Cal Tjader, in a great setting for his vibes – with nice sweet orchestrations by Claus Ogerman, who gives the whole thing a nice deep Euro 60's feel! The group includes Hank Jones, Jerome Richardson & Kenny Burrell. The set's mostly ballads, with a number of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Cal Tjader

Along Comes Cal
Verve, Late 60s. Very Good-
Great stuff – and very very groovy! Cal cut this record for Verve during the height of his swinging 60s Latin years – and he's working here with arranger Chico O'Farrill, who at the time, was perfectly suited for Cal's short, jaunty approach to a groove! The album's filled with nice ... LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, Late 50s/1973. Very Good+
Stitt's Verve recordings were some of his best, and they show the genius of his playing in a relaxed easy setting that lets him get the most out of his solos. Although this album, like most of the ones in this Verve series, offers little info on the dates and players, the material seems to be from ... LP, Vinyl record album

Duke Ellington & Johnny Hodges

Back To Back
Verve, 1959. Very Good-
Duke Ellington makes a rare Verve appearance on this classic album – and works strongly in the mode of earlier sides recorded for the label by Johnny Hodges! Dizzy Gillespie

Gillespie Jam Sessions
Verve, 1953/1954. Very Good+ 2LP
Dizzy really shone in settings like this – working with some of his most able peers, running easily through bop and swing material, and never making a single player feel unwelcome as he outblew them all! The 2LP set features the tune "Jam Blues", recorded in 1953 with a group that ... LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, Mid 50s. Near Mint-
We don't know if we'd stretch so far as to use the word "exciting" to talk about Terry's work – but his band here is filled with some great west coast players – including Bill Perkins, Richie Kamuca, Mel Lewis, Frank Rosolino, and Joe Maini – all coming together with a ... LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, 1949. Very Good+
One of our favorite of Verve's "genius of" collections of Charlie Parker's work – largely because it includes some wonderful and oft-overlooked vocal tunes! 4 of the tracks on the set feature Bird blowing with a vocal chorus arranged by Dave Lambert – in a style that shouldn't ... A wonderful album of 60s Basie – one that focuses on the writing and arranging talents of the great Neal Hefti! Hefti's one of our favorite soundtrack composers of the decade, but in the years before his film fame, he was a frequent partner of Basie – and this album marks one of their ... Herbie Hancock

Lite Me Up
CBS, 1982. Very Good
A classic album of all-out soul from Herbie Hancock – done in close collaboration with Rod Temperton of Heatwave – in a jazzy-styled version of that group's own great groove! Temperton handled arrangements and a lot of songwriting, and most cuts have lead vocals from Wayne Anthony ... LP, Vinyl record album
