Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible. All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

With our Used CDs, you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks — clean, and not dirty at all. You can also expect the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves — putting fresh cases on Used CDs we handle) — and you can expect the booklet to be in good shape, unless noted otherwise. We will list any specific details/defects underneath the item — so look for notes on cutout marks in the case, stamps on the barcode, or details like that.

Carmen McRae In London
Ember/TKO Magnum (UK), 1961. Used
An obscure London live date from Carmen McRae – captured here quite early in her career, and working in the same small combo mode as some of her best recordings from the 50s with Ray Bryant! The group here's a British one – with Don Abney on piano, Kenny Napper on bass, and the great ... CD
Time (Spain), 1962. Used
A wonderful set by Carmen McRae – captured at San Francisco's Sugar Hill in 1962 – backed by a tight trio! Carmen is in sweet form here, very loose and and wise, and the group knows just how to fill out the sound. She scats loosely on the opening "Sunday", nearly hits a weep ... CD
Bluebird, 1988. Used
Incredible work from Carmen – one of her last great albums! The set was recorded in 1988 – but it's got an "instant classic" feel that makes it one of the best vocal jazz albums of its generation. Carmen's working with a small group that includes Charlie Rouse, Larry Willis, ... CD
After Glow
Decca/MCA (Japan), 1957. Used
Sublime early work from Carmen McRae – done with backing from pianist Ray Bryant in a small group setting! Carmen's singing in a beautifully fragile mode – with only Ray's piano and a bit of bass and drums to back her up – and it's a real treat to her the McRae vocal approach in ... CD
Kapp (Japan), 1958. Used
Carmen McRae's book of ballads is a great set of standards – performed by a core trio that features Don Abney on piano, over larger backings by Frank Hunter! The set's a treasure from Carmen's early years – and is filled with dusky renditions of tunes that are familiar, but which have ... CD
Atlantic/Collectables, 1956/1959. Used
2 lovely sides by Chris Conner – early albums she recorded for Atlantic, right after her years at Bethlehem, where she'd perfected an icy cool style of singing that's still to be matched to this day! Both albums feature larger arrangements – I Miss You So by Ray Ellis, and Witchcraft ... CD
Colpix/Collectables, 1962/1963. Used
A pair of Colpix classics from Nina Simone – back to back on a single CD! First up is Nina Sings Ellington – but as always, she makes whatever she sings all her own! The album's a bit straighter than later efforts – with large backings by Stu Phillips that also feature vocals by ... CD
Movin' On
Atlantic/Collectables, 1972. Used
A sweet bit of funky jazz vocals from Oscar Brown Jr – recorded during his early 70s stay at Atlantic Records, in a style that's very different than his early work! The tracks are all still original numbers by Oscar – penned with that clever bad-rapping approach to the lyrics that ... CD
Late Late Show
Capitol/Collectables, Late 50s. Used
A Capitol classic from Dakota Staton – and the record that made her a real leading lady at the label in the years before Nancy Wilson's rise! The set's got a wonderfully laidback feel that's in keeping with the title, yet it also swings nicely too – kind of a new level of soul in jazz ... CD
More Than The Most
Capitol/Collectables, Late 50s. Used
Titles include "Good Bye", "Love Walked In", "Walkin By The River", "East Of The Sun", "High On A Windy Hill", and "It's You Or No One". CD
Collectables/Atlantic, 1962/1966. Used
2 Atlantic sessions from Mose – back to back on one CD! I Don't Worry is one of Mose's first albums for Atlantic – a great set of soulful jazz vocals, done in a rootsy style that has some slight New Orleans touches – and a nice sort of beat undercurrent! The sound of the set ... CD
