June's Got Rhythm

LP (Item 77309) Capitol, 1958 — Condition: Very Good+
Temporarily Out Of Stock

LP, Vinyl record album

❔

June's got rhythm, sure, but the real thing that makes her great is her dark and moody sense of melody! This album's one of June's late 50s efforts done with husband/arranger Bob Cooper – not as arch modern as some of her work with Pete Rugolo, but still in a style that's definitely inspired by that classic work. Backing is by a small group of LA jazzers – including Shelly Manne, Russ Freeman, Laurindo Almeida, Frank Rosolino, and Cooper – and titles include "My One & Only Love", "Blue Moon", "I Can Make You Love Me", "When Lights Are Low", and "Gypsy In My Soul".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Rainbow label pressing.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Nat King Cole

Love Is The Thing
Capitol, 1957. Near Mint-
A classic from Nat King Cole – one of his greatest albums of the 50s, and a mature batch of ballads that show he had really developed into a heck of a singer! Arrangements are by Gordon Jenkins, and the set features a rich array of moody material – including "When I Fall In ... LP, Vinyl record album

Frank Sinatra

Nice & Easy
Capitol, 1960. Very Good+
Frank's last solid album for Capitol, and an easily swinging set that points the way towards the confident maturity of the Reprise years. The title tune, "Nice and Easy", is a classic swinger with great backing by Nelson Riddle – and the rest of the album's selection of tunes is a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Peggy Lee

Man I Love
Capitol, 1957. Near Mint-
Quite a rare album from Peggy Lee – and a strange one too! The album features backings "conducted" by Frank Sinatra, done in a moody, flowing, dreamy and sad style – similar to his own work of the late 50s Capitol years, especially the more melancholy albums that we love so ... Peggy Lee

I Like Men!
Capitol, 1959. Very Good+
A pretty bold assertion from Peggy Lee on the title – but she backs it up nicely in this obscure album of "guy" songs from the end of the 50s! There's a playful feel to the music that fits Lee's vocals very well – as do the bouncy arrangements from Jack Marshall, who turns ... LP, Vinyl record album

Time To Swing
Capitol, 1959. Very Good+
It's time to swing, but with a classy sound throughout – very much the best mix of modes Dakota Staton brought to her key early years at Capitol Records! Backings are by Sid Feller, and are pretty darn jazzy throughout – more so than some of Sid's other work of the time – a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Keely Smith

Politely!
Capitol, 1958. Near Mint-

Capitol, Late 50s. Very Good
One of Louie's greatest albums ever – a hard-swingin batch of vocal group tunes, with all the sound that made him famous! Mel Torme

Prelude To A Kiss
Tops, 1957. Very Good-
One of the best-ever Mel Torme jazz vocal albums – right up there with his best Bethlehem recordings! The set was recorded with Marty Paich's Dek-tette, who set the tone perfectly for the warmly perfect style of The Velvet Fog – and who, like Mel, manage to be totally polished, yet ... AVA, 1963. Very Good-
Great work by a great singer – the far under-recorded Irene Kral, a lovely lady who really bridges a number of different camps in the vocal jazz world! At one level, Irene's got the coolness of a Christy or Connor, but at another, she's got a more open, swinging, and soulful style – ... LP, Vinyl record album
