June's Got Rhythm

LP (Item 77309) Capitol, 1958 — Condition: Very Good

June's got rhythm, sure, but the real thing that makes her great is her dark and moody sense of melody! This album's one of June's late 50s efforts done with husband/arranger Bob Cooper – not as arch modern as some of her work with Pete Rugolo, but still in a style that's definitely inspired by that classic work. Backing is by a small group of LA jazzers – including Shelly Manne, Russ Freeman, Laurindo Almeida, Frank Rosolino, and Cooper – and titles include "My One & Only Love", "Blue Moon", "I Can Make You Love Me", "When Lights Are Low", and "Gypsy In My Soul".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Rainbow label pressing. Cover has light wear, and some tape on the seams.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

A later Capitol gem by June – where she reprisies a number of classics from her early years with Stan Kenton – new versions of late 40s tunes, done here with Pete Rugolo arrangements that go a good way towards showing how both he and June had grown during the 50s. June Christy

Misty Miss Christy
Capitol, Mid 50s. Very Good
One of June's all-time classics – and perhaps her most famous album, next to the sublime Something Cool. The set, like that one, was arranged and conducted by Pete Rugolo – whose icy and modern touches are the perfect foil for June's sad and dark voice. Familiar tunes are completely ... Start Of Something
Capitol, Late 50s. Very Good
Quite possibly the greatest of Mark Murphy's early albums for Capitol – a heavily swinging set that features some great arrangements from Bill Holman, and Mark's classic version of the title tune – which he'd reprise nicely in years to come! The album's got Murphy in great west coast ... LP, Vinyl record album

The gentler side of Keely Smith – recorded here away from Louis Prima in a warmly sweet style that reminds us that she's a heck of a great singer on her own!
