Blowin' Gold (2LP Chess pressing)

LP (Item 76948) Chess/Cadet, Late 60s — Condition: Near Mint-
2LP
2 great early sessions from John Klemmer – a real giant on the tenor, with a sound that long deserves to be revived! These sides have a sound that's pretty frenetic, and a style that presages a lot of the white free fusion players that would show up in the 70s. The first LP, Blowin' Gold, finds Klemmer on straight tenor and playing with some electronic effects on the horn – and he's working with a hip Chicago soul jazz combo that includes Phil Upchurch on bass, Morris Jennings on drums, Pete Cosey on guitar, and Richard Thompson on piano and organ. The cuts are all pretty straight for Klemmer – and have that wonderful mix of styles that you'd find in the Cadet studios of the late 60s, with bits of rock, soul, and funk working their way into the mix. Titles include "Excursion #2", "My Heart Sings", "Third Stone From The Sun", "Free Soul", and "Children Of The Earth Flames". On the second album, Eruptions, John plays with great abandon and an angular style that's more in keeping with some of the European players of the time, than it is with his labelmates at Cadet . He's backed by organ, electric piano, vibes, and guitar, which also has lots of effects. With the tracks "Gardens Of Uranus", "Summer Song", "Regions Of Fire", and "Lady Toad".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Elektra, 1981. Very Good+ Gatefold
A smooth set from reedman John Klemmer, but a pretty darn soulful one too – and a great illustration of the way that Klemmer could still hold onto his roots a lot more strongly than some of his contemporaries! The backings are gentle and fusiony – often with some great keyboard work ... LP, Vinyl record album

Great later blowing from John Klemmer – clear, clean, and extremely well-focused – with nary a dull moment throughout! Involvement
Cadet, 1967. Near Mint-
Beautiful early work from John Klemmer – one of the most under-rated talents of his generation, and a great player who frequently gets overlooked because of his later, smoother work. This album is Klemmer's first – recorded with a soulful Chicago tenor sound, touched with some of the ... LP, Vinyl record album

King Fleming Trio

Weary Traveler
Cadet, 1965. Very Good-
One of three rare Chess Records sessions recorded by Chicago pianist King Fleming – a great player who was part of the same big generation and Ramsey Lewis and Ahmad Jamal – and was supposedly a big influence on the latter! Playin' For Keeps
Cadet, 1966. Near Mint-
Tremendous work from an alto player with a very unique conception – a player who was unlike Charlie Parker, Sonny Stitt, or some of his precursors on the instrument – and instead really took off in bold new directions, like Lou Donaldson or fellow Chicagoan Sonny Cox in the mid 60s! ... Ode To 52nd Street
Cadet, 1967. Near Mint-
A really wonderful Chess/Cadet session from the 60s – not the bop-styled record you might expect from the 52nd Street reference in the title! Movie Album
Cadet, Mid 60s. Very Good+ Gatefold
Jazzy and classy – and one of the first of Ramsey's albums to feature him working with larger arrangements instead of the usual trio. A very nicely selected 2LP set of tracks from Stitt's oft-overlooked years at Argo/Chess! Lou Donaldson

Rough House Blues
Cadet, 1964. Very Good+
One of Lou's more unique sides of the 60s – as the album features him as the main soloist over arrangements by a group headed up by Oliver Nelson.
