Journey To Capricorn

LP (Item 76690) Creative World, 1976 — Condition: Very Good+
One of the best of Stan's mid 70s albums – a very hip set of big band tracks that swings with a fluid and soulful approach that you wouldn't normally associate with the Kenton groove! In a way, the overall feel here is somewhere in the territory of some of Woody Herman's excellent early 70s work – although with a bit less funk and electronics. Titles include "90 Celsius", "Granada Smoothie", "Pegasus", "Too Shy To Say", "Celebration Suite", and "Journey To Capricorn".  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Kenton In Hi-Fi
Capitol, 1956. Very Good+
Easily the most successful album that Stan Kenton ever recorded – a brilliant reworking of older Kenton band standards, done with the dynamics of the 50s hi fi scene! The album's a much-needed one to any fan of Stan's genius – as the tunes are presented here in recordings that really ... LP, Vinyl record album

Stan Kenton

Adventures In Jazz
Capitol, Early 60s. Near Mint-
Stan reprises his famous modernist swing in a great little album that's one of his best works from the early 60s. The tracks are longish, with the mixture of dark shading and breakout solos that grace some of his best early work – and although the players in the group aren't the famous west ... Stan Kenton

Cuban Fire
Capitol, 1956. Very Good
One of Kenton's greatest records, and the one in which he proves his dedication to Latin styles, by serving up a killer batch of Afro-Cuban tracks with an incredibly authentic feel. Stan Kenton

Hair
Capitol, Late 60s. Near Mint-
A great album by Stan Kenton – a reading of the Hair score, and a lot groovier than most of his other 60s work! Part of the reason for this is Ralph Carmichael – who does the arrangements for the record, and brings in plenty of the cool touches he was using on his own records from the ... A great big band indeed – a session from 1960 that has Bill Holman still sitting nicely at the top of the west coast large group format from the 50s! Columbia, 1957. Near Mint-
One of JJ's best from the late 50s – a tightly crackling hardbop set, recorded very much in the manner of his classic JJ Inc album! Larry Coryell

Coryell
Vanguard, 1969. Very Good+
Maybe the funkiest album that guitarist Larry Coryell ever cut – his debut as a leader, and a fuzzy, freaky set that features some massively heavy drums from the great Bernard Purdie! The set's jazz at the core, but has lots of rock elements too – including vocals from Coryell on a few ... LP, Vinyl record album
