An incredible little album from Eric Kloss – one of our favorites ever from this period, and a record that shows how tremendously he'd grown in just a few years of jazz recording! The set features a quintet with Dave Holland on bass, Ron Thomas on electric piano, and Pat Martino on guitar – grooving with Kloss on long, searching tunes that have a heck of a lot of modal soul. The album kicks off with the extended suite "One Two Free" – which gets "free" at the end, but which serves up some nice blocky grooves at the beginning – and it's followed up by the tracks "It's Too Late" and "Licea", both of which have a wonderfully solid sound!  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We only use the grade "Used CD" for non-new CDs. This all-encompassing grade was chosen it because we only buy and offer used CDs in the best possible condition.

When you purchase a used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use, but if there are significant details or defects we will describe the item's condition (just like we do with LPs), so look for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details before ordering.

All of our used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. After you receive a used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly. If it does not, you can request a return for a full refund.

Cobblestone/32 Jazz, 1968. Used
This one was recorded in 1968, issued briefly on a small label, and then finally pressed for the larger masses during the early 70s by the Cobblestone label. Despite this checkered history, though, the album's one of Green's best small group recordings – and features a classic jazz organ ... CD

Kenny Barron

Sunset To Dawn
Muse, 1973. Used
Sublime 70s work from Kenny Barron – a record that really has him stretching out strongly from his roots in the 60s, and sounding almost even more inventive than on some of his later material as well! Kenny's playing a fair bit of keyboards on the set – showing a wonderful sensitivity ... CD
32 Jazz/Atlantic, 1968. Used
An early album as a leader from the great Roy Ayers – a set that captures the vibes man at a time when he'd been working on the west coast soul jazz scene, and was stepping into even greater fame in the group of Herbie Mann! Yet this set is definitely Roy's own – kind of an ... CD

Woody Shaw

Setting Standards
32 Jazz/Muse, 1983. Used
A lovely record from Woody Shaw – one of his excellent and understated sides from the early 80s, recorded with a quartet that includes Cedar Walton on piano, Buster Williams on bass, and Victor Jones on drums. The tunes are mostly standards, but they're handled with a soulful depth that ... CD

Johnny Lytle

Moonchild (Muse)
Muse, 1991. Used
A later set by soul jazz vibist Johnny Lytle – but a great one too, and a date that's done with a straight ahead mode that shows he's still swinging hard! The record's a bit less groove-oriented than some of Lytle's earlier efforts, but in ways that really focus on his longer-wind chops as a ... CD
32 Jazz, 1960s/1997. Used 3 CDs
One of the greatest contributions made by the 32 Jazz label so far has been the rich amount of classic Roland Kirk material they've released on the market. The best of Kirk's work has been out of print for years, and like the folks at 32 Jazz, we think that's a darn shame – which is why we're ... CD
32 Jazz/Atlantic, 1969/1972. Used 2 CDs
2 classic Atlantic sessions by Roland Kirk! The wonderful Volunteered Slavery is our favorite Roland Kirk album, and a beautiful mix of two different styles. Side one's got Roland doing these crazy takes on late 60's pop cuts like "My Cherie Amour" and "Say a Little Prayer", ... CD

Jack Walrath

Gut Feelings
Muse, 1990. Used
A really compelling album from trumpeter Jack Walrath – just the sort of effort that gets us to take a lot closer work at his other work as a leader! The album's got a very ambitious sort of feel – a core combo backed by larger strings – all in a range of unusual rhythms and ... CD

Al Di Meola

Casino
Columbia, 1978. Used
Casino has a smaller, tighter lineup than some of Al DiMeola's other records of the time, but the overall sound is still pretty far-reaching – thanks to a mix of keyboards from Barry Miles, and a blistering array of acoustic and electric guitars from Al himself! Steve Gadd propels the group ... CD
