CD

Exactly the kind of session that really lets Pepper Adams show his stuff – full of long, live tracks that really have Adams stretching out on baritone – handling the instrument with soul, depth, and dexterity that might well be unmatched during this point in his career! The quartet here features Walter Norris on piano, George Mraz on bass, and Makaya Ntshoko on drums – and while all players are excellent, especially Mraz, it's really Pepper whose shining light guides the session – both on his original tunes "Bossa Nouveau" and "12th & Pingree" – and on nice takes on "Well You Needn't" and "A Child Is Born".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Out of print. Includes obi – and still in shrink.)

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible.

When you purchase a Used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use but if there are significant details or defects we will list them underneath the item — just like we do with LPs — so look there for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details.

All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

A real lost treasure from Pacific Jazz – a rare late 50s west coast session from Pepper Adams, featuring the amazing baritonist in a group with Lee Katzman on trumpet, Jimmy Rowles on piano, Doug Watkins on bass, and Mel Lewis on drums! The sound is incredible – on a par with that rare ... CD
Savoy, 1957. Used
A fantastic album from Pepper Adams – one of his best, and an incredibly swinging session that will make you forget that he's playing a heavy baritone! At some level, the session shouldn't work so well – as it's got a rhythm group that's not particularly hard-hitting – with Hank ... CD

Cecil Taylor

Dark To Themselves
Enja/Blue Moon, 1976. Used
One of Cecil Taylor's most spiritual sessions of the 70s – a live set recorded in Yugoslavia in 1976, and done with this really open sound, but one that comes as much from the horns as it does from Cecil's piano! In fact, we might well say that the horns are the best attraction here – ... CD

Count Basie with Sarah Vaughan

Count Basie & Sarah Vaughan (with bonus tracks)
Roulette, 1960. Used
Sarah Vaughan gets some backing from Count Basie – making for a record that's one of her jazziest and swinging of the time! As with other Basie-related vocal sessions from the early 60s, this one has a soulful edge and a nice little bounce – one that makes for a more solid approach ... CD

Siesta
Warner, 1987. Used
One of Miles' last great albums – a soundtrack composed in conjunction with Marcus Miller, and recorded with a mix of atmospheric electronics and trumpet solos, coming off in a way that sounds far better than most of his other attempts at this style from the time.
