Checkin' In With Don Covay

LP (Item 763778) Mercury/Polygram, 1973/1974 — Condition: Near Mint-

(Cover has light wear.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Jerry Butler

Soul Artistry
Mercury, 1967. Very Good+
Beautiful uptown soul from Jerry – with pre Gamble-Huff arrangements by Jo Renzetti and Jimmy Wisner. The tracks do a great job of maintaining the perfect Iceman sound from Jerry's late Vee Jay years, yet also hint nicely at the direction to come. Titles include "You Walked Into My ... Man In Love
Pulsar/Mercury, Late 60s. Very Good+
A rare non-Stax set from King Floyd – with work that's different than his material for the label – given a bit of New Orleans spin, thanks to arrangements by Harold Battiste! All tracks are original by the King – and titles include "Times Have Changed", "Groov-a-Lin ... LP, Vinyl record album

Amazing Timi Yuro
Mercury, Early 60s. Very Good+
Amazing is right! Timi's one of the great under-rated Uptown Soul talents of the 60s, and this is one of her best records. The album features stunning production, in the best Mercury pop soul style of the 60s – with Quincy Jones at the controls, and Bobby Scott arranging and conducting. ... LP, Vinyl record album

Barbara Mason

Love's The Thing
Buddah, 1975. Very Good+
A really great step forward for Barbara Mason – a record that's got her working in a more mature mode than before, and a deeper soul style as well! One of the bigger developments of Barbara Mason's career was her participation in the "answer song" cycle that circulated around ... LP, Vinyl record album

Norman Feels

Norman Feels
Just Sunshine, 1973. Sealed Gatefold
Mellow soul, sweeping strings, and sweet electric keys – a stone 70s classic from Norman Feels – one of the greatest soul singers you've never heard before! Vernon Burch

Get Up
Chocolate City/Casablanca, 1979. Near Mint-
Bouncy, bubbly soul from Vernon Burch – one of his stone dancefloor classics from the 70s, served up with a groove that never quits! Jerry Butler

Folk Songs
Vee Jay, Early 60s. Sealed
A great lost album from Jerry – and a key link in the hip Chicago scene that produced Terry Callier and Oscar Brown Jr! Sure, you might think of the album as a silly "cash in on the folk craze" effort – but Jerry keeps it soulful throughout, and thanks to some wonderful ... LP, Vinyl record album

Padlock – Special Mixes By Larry Levan
Garage/Island, 1983. Very Good+
A mini-LP, but one that packs more punch than most full length sets – thanks to a top-shelf lineup all the way through! The set's a project put together by Sly & Robbie, and recorded at Compass Point Studios – all with a groove that's kind of a dubbier take on the sound of New York ... LP, Vinyl record album
