Since I Met You Baby

LP (Item 761699) Mercury, Mid 50s — Condition: Near Mint-
A fantastic collection of work from the MGM years of Ivory Joe Hunter – music that mixes blues roots with a touch of jazz, and also points the way towards country soul to come in the 60s – a strong precursor of work from Joe Tex, Solomon Burke, and others.  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(80s pressing. Cover has light wear and lightly bent corners.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Jerry Butler

Spice Of Life
Mercury, 1972. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
Perhaps the greatest record Jerry Butler made in the 70s, and a very tight bit of baroque Chicago soul with arrangements and production by Samuel F. Brown III. The tracks are a good mix of originals and covers, and they all show Jerry going way past his Gamble & Huff/Mercury years – into ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ohio Players

Jass-Ay-Lay-Dee
Mercury, 1978. Near Mint- Gatefold
While there was no naked bald lady on the cover of Jass-Ay-Lay-Dee, it is actually a move back towards the sweatier funk sounds of their more classic LPs. There's some tight playing and solid songwriting going on here, too, with a bit less of the smooth, sultry grooves with funky touches that ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ohio Players

Honey
Mercury, 1975. Near Mint- Gatefold
A legendary album from The Ohio Players – a set that's famous not just for its sexy cover, but for the way the group managed to set a whole new standard for mainstream funk at the time! The group started out in the farther reaches of the Midwest underground, and previously had brought some ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ohio Players

Ohio Players Gold
Mercury, 1976. Very Good Gatefold
A well-titled set – as it's the mid 70s, and the Ohio Players were certainly turning out a lot of gold! Their move to Mercury Records from the smaller indie Westbound was a real winning move – as it gave them a smoother soul feel that only expanded their groove, not restricted it! ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ohio Players

Fire
Mercury, 1975. Very Good+ Gatefold
One of the biggest albums ever for Ohio Players – a set that took their earlier funk sound and targeted firmly at the mainstream with a lean, mean groove that a million other groups copied at the time! There's still plenty of the soul of the early years in the group's approach here – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ohio Players

Mr Mean
Mercury, 1977. Very Good+ Gatefold
A lesser-known 70s album by The Ohio Players – tunes recorded for the soundtrack of the late blacksploitation film Mr Mean, but also very much in the tight funk format of the group's Mercury work! Tracks are nice and long overall – almost in a stretched-out take on the soundtrack mode, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Buddy Miles

Buddy Miles Live
Mercury, 1971. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
One of the most soulful sets ever recorded by the Buddy Miles Group – a really searing set of live performances from 1971, often done in a way that has the band stretching out and jamming heavily! The core group seems a bit bigger than usual – with a lineup that includes guitar and ... LP, Vinyl record album
Mercury, Late 60s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
The great Chuck Berry was still going strong long after leaving Chess Records – using his time at Mercury in the late 60s to really open up, and continue to evolve his craft – as you'll hear in in this double length set that includes a concert at the Fillmore with the Steve Miller Band! Clyde McPhatter

Lover Please

Clyde McPhatter

Rhythm & Soul
Mercury, Early 60s. Very Good+
Really wonderful work from Clyde McPhatter – one of the overlooked gems from his years at Mercury Records – a time when his voice could still soar like it did at Atlantic, but also hit more sophisticated modes too! Titles include "Stop", "The Best Man Cried", "I ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dennis Coffey

Electric Coffey
Sussex, 1972. Very Good+
Mad funk from Dennis Coffey – and the follow-up to his landmark Evolution album! It's interesting to note that Coffey's group is listed as the "Detroit Guitar Band" – which kind of foregrounds their link between the city's two strongest music sides of the late 60s: the hard ... Johnnie Taylor

Disco 9000
Columbia, 1977. Very Good+
Disco 9000 is Johnnie Taylor's 3rd release for Columbia – a great batch of smooth soul tracks with a lot less of the "disco" that you'd expect from the title! Johnnie produced the session himself – and the album was recorded as a soundtrack (to a film that was later retitled ... LP, Vinyl record album
