Bombay grooves, but not just the disco promised in the title – as these cuts come mostly from the 80s years of Bollywood, and show Indian funk moving into a great new realm of styles! There's definitely a disco vibe at the core – and as in other scenes, the style stayed current a lot longer in India than it did in the US – but there's also some other great 80s elements at play, including some electro touches, bits of house, and even some bits that feel more like indie boogie material than the usual Bollywood groove! Together, the tracks are a real revelation – and push our understanding of Indian film grooves way past any simple cliches – and also have inspired us to start digging for these overlooked gems from later years too. The package comes with notes and images of the records – and titles include "Tadeer Ka Bashah" by Bappi Lahiri, "Aaya Sanam Aaya Deewana Tera" by Kishore Humar, "Pass Ao Na" by Asha Bhosle, "Saat Samundar Paar" by Sadhana Sargam, "Hotel Mein Bottle" by Sharda, "Dance Music" by Hridaynath Mageshkar, "Jab Chaye" by Asha Bhosle, "Main Jaadugar" by Kumar Sanu & Jolly Mukherjee, and "Disco Music" by RD Burman.  © 1996-2021, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible.

When you purchase a Used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use but if there are significant details or defects we will list them underneath the item — just like we do with LPs — so look there for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details.

All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

Motel, Mid 70s. Used
Nice one – a nice batch of funky sountrack material, culled from classic Indian "brownsploitation" action films from the 1970s – and the music's every bit as wild and funky as you'd imagine. The bottom groove is classic 70's funk, as you might hear in an American action film ... CD

Mike Nyoni & Born Free

My Own Thing
Now Again, Mid 70s. Used 2 CDs
Wonderfully trippy sounds from Mike Nyoni – one of the funkier talents in the Zamrock scene of the 70s – even though he also works with lots of the slight psychedelic touches of other contemporaries too! Mike's style on guitar is a bit too loose to be funk, but it's also got this nice ... CD
Folkways, 1979. Used
A beautifully poetic take on the transplantation of African sounds in the US scene – played on a variety of different instruments by Bilal Abdurahman! The tracks are mostly short, percussive ones – with the strongest focus on instrumentation, but with occasional vocal refrains from ... CD

RD Burman

Mukti
Subah Zindagi (UK), Late 70s. Used
A classic soundtrack from Indian film composer Rahul Dev Burman – and one that reminds us just how important the voice was to the format over the years! Unlike some Bollywood soundtracks, which have long upbeat songs that are driving the dance numbers in the film – this score has a ... CD

Paco De Lucia

Fuente Y Caudal
Philips/Universal (Spain), 1973. Used
One of our favorite albums ever from the legendary Paco De Lucia – and a set that really has the guitarist coming into his own – stepping past even his rich flamenco roots, and coming up with a new style that's practically a genre unto itself! Paco's sense of imagination here is ... CD

Nomo

New Tones
Ubiquity, 2006. Used
Mindblowing work from one of the greatest new groups we've heard in years – Michigan's mighty Nomo, easily one of the greatest Afro Funk combos going! Nomo's got a tightness that surpasses most other heirs to Fela's throne – an intensely focused energy that's really tremendous – ... CD
Knitting Factory, 1979/1980. Used Gatefold
Two beautiful albums from one of the most difficult periods of Fela's life. "Coffin For Head Of State (Part 1 & 2)" is a mournful dirge-like track (although not without a good deal of funk), written around the death of Fela's mother from an attack on his Kalakatua Republic. "Unk ... CD
Celluloid/Knitting Factory, 1985. Used
A richly expanded version of this key Fela album from the 80s – one that adds in a full extra bonus album's worth of material! The CD contains the full 30 minute version of "Army Arrangement", a great mid 80s tune that was one of Fela's strongest political tracks – an ... CD
Knitting Factory, 1986. Used Gatefold
An overlooked gem from the 80s years of Fela Kuti – and a set that has the Afro Funk genius working with strong studio help from Wally Badarou! The vibe's still as fierce and frenetic as Fela's classic material – each track takes up a full side of the record, with lots of hard rhythms, ... CD
