Hank Ballard's Biggest Hits

LP (Item 75755) King, Late 50s/Early 60s — Condition: Sealed
A pretty strong overview of Hank's fiercer R&B tunes for King Records – most of them cut at the end of the 50s, with that mean and lean style that actually could make Hank sound pretty darn scary! Titles include "It's Love Baby", "Sugaree", "Annie Had A Baby", "Hoochi Coochi Coo", "I'm Learning", "Teardrops On Your Letter", and "Let's Go Let's Go Let's Go".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

James Brown & Others

Jump Around
King, Early 60s. Very Good+
A slammin' set of heavy R&B numbers from James Brown – combined in here with some other nice tracks from King Records artists of the time! The set almost has the same feeling as some of the James Brown Show albums – in that James is presented with other hard-hitting artists of his ... LP, Vinyl record album
King, 1967. Very Good+
Raw soul, indeed – a term that could have been coined for James Brown's vocal approach, and which probably makes one of its first appearances here on a record! The album's kind of a grab bag of earlier sides that James recorded for King, but it's a perfect showcase for his amazing sound in ... LP, Vinyl record album

King, Late 50s. Very Good+
Very early work from Joe Tex – recorded way before his boogie records of the 70s, and even his country soul classics of the 60s! Yet despite the age of these sides, the Joe Tex vocal approach is very firmly in place – that raspy mode that's undeniably human, and which might be rooted ... LP, Vinyl record album

Little Esther (Esther Phillips)

Bad Baad Girl
King/Charly (UK), Early 50s. Near Mint-

James Brown

Live At The Apollo
King, 1963. Very Good
A landmark album that forever changed the face of live recordings – and soul music too! Gettin' Down To It
King, 1969. Very Good Gatefold
A great little album by James Brown – and very different than his other work! Curtis Mayfield

Do It All Night
Curtom, 1978. Near Mint-
A clubbier album than usual from Curtis Mayfield – a mid 70s attempt to move onto the dancefloor, but a set that's still got the undeniable Mayfield charm!
