Sublime solo piano from Randy Weston – just the sort of record to remind us why his skills in such a setting can always be so great! The tunes are filled with energy and rhythm right from the start – spun out in those long African-inspired lines that Randy first forged in the 50s, but really taken to new heights here in a European setting – a mix of modern angles and warmer spirits that's always held together by the rhythmic pulsations inherent in Weston's playing. And while Randy deftly demonstrates these qualities well on other records from the time, there's no better way to hear it so clearly as in a solo setting like this! Titles include "Jejouka", "Blues To Senegal", "Yubadee", "Con Alma", and "Little Niles".  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(2013 digipak pressing.)

Used CD Grade

We use the all-encompassing grade "Used CD" for non-new CDs because we only buy and offer used CDs in the best possible condition.

When you purchase a used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use, but if there are significant details or defects we describe the item's condition (just like we do with LPs), so look for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details before ordering.

All of our used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. After you receive a used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly. If it does not, you can request a return for a full refund.

Condition Notes

If something is relevant, we try to describe it in the notes — especially if it is release or packaging details, or an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the CD. This might include, but isn't limited to, scratches, tracks that skip, case/insert damage or wear, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Randy Weston

Piano A La Mode
Jubilee/Warner (Japan), 1957. Used
One of the most obscure Randy Weston albums of the 50s – and one of the most striking, too! The title and cover are a bit unassuming, but Weston's in his prime modern mode throughout – working both through his own compositions, and on some amazing remakes of older standards – all ... CD

Randy Weston

Jazz A La Bohemia
Riverside/OJC, 1956. Used
Key early work from the great Randy Weston – a live performance from Cafe Bohemia, featuring an unusual group that includes Ahmed Abdul-Malik on bass and Cecil Payne on baritone sax! The presence of Payne makes the record more than just an angular piano trio outing, and allows Weston to ... CD
Milestone/Prestige, Mid 50s-Early 60s. Used
Two of Randy's Weston's earliest albums – both recorded in the mid 50s, and briefly (and rarely) issued on the Riverside label. The album's feature Weston playing in a very spare setting – as only 5 of the tracks feature a trio (with Art Blakey on drums and Sam Gill on bass), and ... CD
Verve, 1989. Used
Wonderful late Randy Weston material – with a group that includes Jamil Nasser on bass, Idris Muhammad on drums, and Eric Asante on percussio! Titles include "Ganawa In Paris", "The Last Day", "African Night", "Night In Medina", and "Portrait Of ... CD
Dawn/Biograph, 1956. Used
One of the first true moments of brilliance from pianist Randy Weston – an early effort for a larger group – of the sort that allowed him to work out even more complicated patterns and rhythms in his music! The jagged Weston approach to a piano line is very firmly in place, even at ... CD
Enja (Germany), 1989. Used
Later live work from Dizzy Gillespie – working in London here with a very hip ensemble! We're not entirely sure of the date, but given the skinny ties on a few of the players, we're guessing it's from that 80s stretch when Dizzy was still going strong – working in a great mix of Latin ... CD

Kenny Barron

What If?
Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1986. Used
Although Kenny Barron's always a heck of a great musician on his own or in a piano trio, we're especially partial to his work in groups with horn players – and this album is a great example of that preference! Kenny first came to fame working with Dizzy Gillespie in the 60s, and since that ... CD

With Franco on trumpet, Mike Brecker on tenor, John Clark on French horn, Kenny Kirkland on piano, Buster Williams on bass, and Daniel Humair on drums. CD

John Scofield

Shinola
Enja (Germany), 1982. Used
A wonderful setting for the guitar of John Scofield – one that really brings out all the rich chromes of his early work on the instrument! The group's a trio – with Adam Nussbaum on drums and Steve Swallow on bass – and in a way, there's a vibe here that reminds us of some of the ... CD

Barry Harris

Live At Dug
Enja (Germany), 1995. Used
Barry Harris recorded live in Tokyo – working at the intimate Dug nightclub, with backing from Japanese players Kunimitsuj Inaba on bass and Fumio Watanabe on drums! The style here is in the warmer side of the Harris spectrum – sometimes introspective, sometimes a bit more grooving ... CD
