CD

Sparkling work from singer Irene Kral – and possibly the best album she ever cut! The backings here are by the Herb Pomeroy group – a slightly modern ensemble that still knows how to swing with a good dose of Boston soul – and the overall feel of the album's a lot more forceful than some of Irene's other albums, packing a punch we didn't know she had, and which we're happy to hear! There's a few cooler overtones here – somewhat in the June Christie mode – but overall the sound is upbeat, full, and swinging – served up with in arrangements by Ernie Wilkins and Al Cohn. Titles include "This Little Love", "What's Right For You", "Comes Love", "Lazy Afternoon", "I'd Know You Anywhere", and "It Isn't So Good".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible. All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

With our Used CDs, you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks — clean, and not dirty at all. You can also expect the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves — putting fresh cases on Used CDs we handle) — and you can expect the booklet to be in good shape, unless noted otherwise. We will list any specific details/defects underneath the item — so look for notes on cutout marks in the case, stamps on the barcode, or details like that.

Nancy Wilson/Cannonball Adderley
Capitol, Mid 60s. Used
The sweet vocals of Nancy join the classic Cannonball quintet for a great set of soul jazz tunes that was one of Capitol's biggest selling jazz sides in the 60s! About half the cuts feature Nancy on vocals – on tunes like "Save Your Love For Me", "Never Will I Marry", ... CD
Capitol, 1958. Used
The title certainly gets it right – as Dakota Staton is definitely dynamic on this one, but not in a way that's hokey or forced at all! Instead, the record nicely lifts Staton from some of the more laidback and bluesy modes of her other 50s records – into a fuller range of styles that ... CD

June Christy

Cool School/Do Re Mi
Capitol (UK), 1960/1961. Used
2 rare gems from June Christy's later years on Capitol – back to back on one CD! The Cool School is easily one of June's greatest albums – even if it is an unusual one! The format here is a far cry from the boozier modes of Christy's earlier career – as the tunes on the set are ... CD
Capitol/DRG, 1959. Used
It's time to swing, but with a classy sound throughout – very much the best mix of modes Dakota Staton brought to her key early years at Capitol Records! Backings are by Sid Feller, and are pretty darn jazzy throughout – more so than some of Sid's other work of the time – a ... CD

Come Dance With Me
Capitol, Mid 50s. Used
Billy May's got Frank nicely swinging on this one – working on a set of older numbers, retuned for the Sinatra sound of 50s Capitol! The band is tight, the sound is right, and Frank steps out nicely on songs that he sung years before in other settings – but quite possibly never so well ... CD

Blue Note, 1993. Used

Chris Connor

Portrait Of Chris
Atlantic/Collectors Choice, 1960. Used
A very moody album from Chris Connor – one that features arrangements by Ronnie Ball and Jimmy Jones, on a somber set of songs that makes the album one of Chris' darkest for Atlantic! Most of the tunes are in small group settings – a bit tightly arranged, but in a good way that gives ... CD
