Exploring the Unknown

LP (Item 748835) RCA, 1955 — Condition: Very Good
One of the postwar space-age classics! The normally-sleepy chorus of Walter Schumann is used to create the backdrop for a narrative of space flight – read by Paul Frees, and involving the takeoff of a rocket from the Pacific, soaring into space, past the moon, and arriving on Venus. The voices drift in and out of the mix, louder and softer while Frees reads from the script for the album. The orchestrations are by Leith Stevens, best known for his jazzy soundtrack work, but sounding pretty great here, and providing a perfect spooky accompaniment to the voices and reading. Titles include "Space Station", "New Frontiers", "Arrival At Venus", "Teleportation", "The Comets", and "Regions Of Other Suns".  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Mono black label pressing with deep groove. Back cover has a light trace of a small sticker.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Condition Notes

If something is relevant, we try to describe it in the notes — especially if it is release or pressing details, or an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Music For Bachelors
RCA, 1956. Very Good
A classic album of 50s mood music – partially for its famous cover image of Jayne Mansfield on the telephone! But the music's pretty great too – less of the swinging, dynamic sounds you might guess from the "bachelor" in the title – and more in the mellower, romantic ... LP, Vinyl record album

Michel Colombier

Wings
A&M, 1971. Near Mint- Gatefold
French arranger/composer Michel Colombier was responsible for some incredibly beautiful and nicely funky baroque easy recordings during the late 60s. This album has him working in America, bringing his unusual style to the A&M studios, and working with Herb Albert to realize a new level of pop ... LP, Vinyl record album

Steve Philips

Organ Favorites
Craftsmen, Late 1950s. Very Good
Steve Philips may not be the most exciting organ player in the world – but the album's got a very young Mary Tyler Moore posing on the cover, which is pretty darn cool! LP, Vinyl record album

Joshua Rifkin

Baroque Beatles Book
Elektra, 1965. Very Good+
One of the weirdest Beatle-related projects of the 60s – and one of the most abstract, as well! The album's got kind of an odd concept – in that it purports to be a rediscovery of rare baroque music roots of famous Beatle tunes by Lennon & McCartney – recorded with offbeat ... Nick De Caro

Happy Heart
A&M, 1969. Near Mint-
One of the few albums as an artist from the great Nick De Caro – one of the hipper arrangers of the 60s, best known for his collaborations with Claudine Longet on A&M! Nick's a very subtle genius – one who can work firmly inside the mainstream, but also bring something different to ... LP, Vinyl record album

Burt Bacharach

Burt Bacharach (1971)
A&M, 1971. Near Mint- Gatefold
Insanely wonderful work by Bacharach – in a way that we can hardly begin to describe (but we'll certainly try!) By the time this one was recorded – 1971 – Burt's reputation as a songwriter and arranger were so firmly established that he had an incredible amount of freedom in the ... LP, Vinyl record album
Mercury, 1967. Very Good+
A fairly sincere collection of instrumental versions of tracks from Sgt Pepper's, performed by the great Brit Easy bandleader Peter Knight, who worked with Scott Walker, Dusty Springfield, and Dee Dee Warwick. The album's a lot less camp than you'd expect, and Knight does a good job of coming up ... LP, Vinyl record album
