cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.
An early leader session for Jimmy Cleveland – one that pulls him out of the Lionel Hampton group, and puts him in the company of a number of different all-stars – top level players that Mercury brought together in three different sessions for the album. Players include Lucky Thompson, ... LP, Vinyl record album
Arguably Jimmy Cleveland's most successful album as a leader, thanks in part to some tight charts by the great Ernie Wilkins. The group also plays a big hand in the recording, too – as most players (Junior Mance, Jerome Richardson, Ray Copeland) are pretty darn hip, and manage to drive ... LP, Vinyl record album
A double LP set pulled together in the mid 70s of Jug's bluesy bop sides cut in the late 40s for Mercury. Sidemen include Junior Mance, Albert Ammons, Israel Crosby, Gene Wright and lesser known Chicago locals like Wes Landers, Leo Blevins, Jess Miller and Ernest McDonald. As you'd expect the ... One of Jimmy's last albums for a major label in the 70s – a real back-to-basics set that was recorded live at the Jimmy Smith Supper Club in LA – the "home of fried cornbread and live jazz", and a venue that we certainly wish we could have visited! Jimmy's working here with ... LP, Vinyl record album
There's definitely lots of brass here – as you might guess from the title – but never so much so that it gets in the way of individual soloing by Maynard Ferguson! The date features Maynard working with arrangements by Willie Maiden, Al Cohn, Ernie Wilkins, and Bill Holman – all ... LP, Vinyl record album
Nice 2LP set that brings together some of his most striking sessions of the early 60s recorded for Emarcy. This set includes pieces composed and arranged by Lalo Schifrin played by a large ensemble led by Benny Carter – with Dizzy as the main soloist, and work by players that include James ... From their inception in late 1956, Ramsey Lewis and his famous Young/Holt-era trio were destined for great jazz fame. This 1958 session on Mercury (then based in the group's native Chicago) catches the trio right at the beginning – when they were taking tunes that were pretty well known, and ... One of Cal Tjader's best albums ever – and a sweetly electric side that features Joao Donato on organ and Gary McFarland on vibes! The record is a brilliant extension of Cal's styles at Verve – a bit of Latin, a bit of jazz, with some easily grooving numbers that have just the right ... LP, Vinyl record album
An essential bit of jazz funk from Donald Byrd and Larry Mizell! The groove's very similar to their classic Places & Spaces LP, and the record's got loads of cool spacey tracks with hot funky trumpet from Donald, and cool waves of synth and sound from Larry. The title cut's a great groover, ... LP, Vinyl record album
An excellent gimmick – and yet another way that United Artists was trying to push its "Bond" catalog in the 60s! Count Basie brings a soulful swing to the work of John Barry – hitting hard on the tracks with his own smoking piano, and an orchestra filled with some of his best ... LP, Vinyl record album
