79rs Gang

LP (Item 745179) Sinking City, 2015 — Condition: Near Mint-

A highly percussive New Orleans group with a feel that's right from the streets – just the kind of live, spontaneous energy you'd expect from the "Indian parade" image on the front! Most instrumentation comes from handheld percussion – the kind you'd use when marching down the street – and the vocals are equally rhythmic, and filled with call/response passages that flow from the group members beautifully! The whole thing's wonderfully free of any New Orleans cliches – and feels more like the kind of special music you'd hear in the city when you stumble around a distant corner, and happen upon a special, undiscovered group. Titles include "Drama", "Fungal Alafia Ashay", "Shallow Water", and "Indian Red".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Includes insert.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Now Again, 1976. Near Mint- 2LP
Some of the heaviest work to come from the African scene of the 70s – the initial offering of the Ngozi Family – a group who clearly take strong inspiration from the Cream years of the UK scene, but who also come across with a grittier, punkier vibe overall – thanks to lean, ... Prince Onago & Princess Muana with Chick Foster

Roots Of Rhythm
Jubilee, Late 50s. Very Good
A strange and beautiful session of tracks that mix african percussion with jazzy rhythms, and slight touches of exotica. Olatunji

Drums Of Passion
Columbia, 1960. Very Good
A classic session of pounding percussion – quite possibly the most successful entry into this earthy genre that hit the recording scene at the end of the 50s! Soundway (UK), 2017. Sealed 2LP Gatefold
One of those records that definitely lives up to its cover – as it's not only a great mish-mash of styles, it's also got some 80s instrumental currents that might come as a surprise if you know other records on the Soundway label! The work recasts older elements of Ugandan music with old ... LP, Vinyl record album

Chatur Lal

Drums Of India
World Pacific, Early 60s. Near Mint- Gatefold
One of the most mindblowing albums of Indian music we've ever heard from the early 60s – a set that doesn't focus on sitar or sarod, but on the deft tabla work of Chatur Lal – a really stunning musician! The spare set features long tracks, and just Chatur's tablas and voice alongside ... LP, Vinyl record album

Mencari Tuhan
Akurama (Indonesia), Late 70s. Near Mint-
The group's name means "village people" in their native Java – but the sound here is way different than the big disco act of the time! Detroit had plenty of great harmony groups in the 60s – but by the early 70s, The Detroit Emeralds were right on top – a feat that was easy to do with work this great! Ray Barretto

Eye Of The Beholder
Atlantic/Fania, 1977. Near Mint-
A really wonderful album from Ray Barretto – more jazz fusion than his usual 70s salsa – but in a way that we really really love!
