✈

Swirling Afro soul from Matata – with lots of African rhythms and heavy percussion laced with some trippy elements from the psychedelic scenes in the US and UK! Matana arrived in London, via their native Kenya in the early 70s – and rather seamlessly blended elements of soul, and on this record, touches of psychedelia into the African groove. There is a really jammy feel to the record, with much more interplay with keyboards and guitars than the more JBs-derived soul & funk that would take the driver's seat on later records. The lyrics jump back and forth between Swahili, Lingala and English. Tracks include "Wild River", "Beautiful Burra", "Jungle Warrior", "Mayo Mayo", "I Need Somebody", "Picha Yako", "Mbongo" and more.  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible.

When you purchase a Used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use but if there are significant details or defects we will list them underneath the item — just like we do with LPs — so look there for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details.

All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

African Virtuoses

Classic Guinean Guitar Group
Sterns (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. Used
Beautiful work from African Virtuoses – a group who really earn their name, thanks to great guitar work from Abdoulaye and Sekou Diabate! There's a sweetly trilling feel to most of these numbers – light and melodic guitar interplay over bass and percussion – augmented with a bit ... CD

Birigwa

Birigwa
Seeds/Porter, 1972. Used
A strangely beautiful set of African-tinged folksy soul – with a sound that's pretty darn tough to describe! Birigwa plays guitar and sings – and he's got a breezy style that sounds a bit like Letta Mbulu on some tracks – but a bit more folksy on others, given the largely ... CD

Hallelujah Chicken Run Band

Take One 1974 to 1979
Analog Africa/Alula, Late 70s. Used
A vital compilation of 70s material by Zimbabwe's Hallelujah Chicken Run Band! The Hallelujah Chicken Run Band vocals are led by the great Thomas Mapfumo, but overall it's very much a group effort that's rich in harmonies and backing vocals by all of the members. The guitars are just as important ... CD

Major Lance was one of Chicago's first big soul stars – crossing over big on the charts with huge hits for the Okeh label during the early and mid 60s. That work is very fairly represented here on this 40 track set – with great notes, and a rich selection of songs that even includes a ... CD
