Sixty Minutes With Clarence Carter

LP (Item 74477) Fame/United Artists, 1973 — Condition: Near Mint-
A great little album from Clarence – recorded after his years at Atlantic, but still with the Fame Studios team, and very much in a warm Muscle Shoals groove! Clarence is stretching out a bit more here – sounding more confident, and less self conscious than on some of his earlier albums – a style that makes for a great batch of tunes that fall right in that southern/modern soul divide. Production is nice and tight, and backings are fairly large – but overall the album makes for a side of Clarence that's quite different than his Atlantic recordings – a chapter of his career we wish we'd heard more of! Titles include "Next To You", "Heartbreak Woman", "I'm The Midnight Special", "Love's Trying To Come To You", "I Got Another Woman", and "And They Say Don't Worry".  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Clarence Carter

Real
ABC, 1974. Very Good
Funny that they'd call this one "real", as it's probably the least rootsy of Clarence's albums from the early 70s. Not that that's a problem, though, because McKinley Jackson and Paul Riser handled the arrangements with a style that's very similar to some of Lamont Dozier's work for ABC ... Clarence Carter

Patches
Atlantic, 1970. Very Good
The album that very firmly put Clarence Carter on the mainstream soul map – thanks to his brilliant version of the title tune! By the time of this set, Carter was already one hell of a soul singer – and really brought amazing sounds to play with classic production from Rick Hall and ... LP, Vinyl record album

War

War Live!
United Artists, 1973. Very Good- 2LP Gatefold
War live, a perfect step forward – especially given that the group had already been so jamming on all their previous work in the studio! This classic double-length set may well be one of the best soul live albums of the 70s – right up there with similar 2LP packages from Curtis ... LP, Vinyl record album

A monster set of Chicano funky grooves from LA – most of which forever transformed the sound of funk! The album includes most of the band's best cuts – like "Slippin Into Darkness", "Cisco Kid", "World Is A Ghetto", "All Day Music", "Me & ... LP, Vinyl record album

Electric Indian

Keem-O-Sabe
United Artists, Late 60s. Near Mint-
A goofy mix of groovy instrumental tracks with a weird "Apache"-esque instrumentation made up of some nicely processed guitars. The album's sort of funky in parts, with arrangements by Vince Montana that were recorded at Sigma Sound – and which have a late 60s Philly soul vibe to ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ike Turner

Blues Roots
United Artists, 1972. Very Good+ Gatefold
This album's not lying with the title – as it's a rootsy album of electric blues numbers. Searing guitar, raw drums, horns, bass and piano – played by Ike alone! . Titles include "The Things I Used To Do", "Right On", "Goin Home", "Think", ... LP, Vinyl record album

Marv Johnson

More Marv Johnson
United Artists, 1960. Very Good
Early Detroit soul – the second LP by the great Marv Johnson, one of the first talents to be supervised by a young Berry Gordy! In fact, it could be said that everything Berry put into his work with Marv led to the formation of Motown – as Marv's mixture of smooth vocals and swinging ... LP, Vinyl record album

Brass Construction

Brass Construction II
United Artists, 1976. Sealed
The second album from Brass Construction – heavy horns, basslines, and stellar dancefloor grooves – a stone classic! The first one was totally great, but they cast a wider stylistic claim on II – their trademark funky sound is still very firmly in place, but they bring more to ... LP, Vinyl record album
United Artists, 1973. Very Good+
War delivers the word, and a whole lot more as well – that amazing blend of styles that always made the group way more than just the sum of its parts! The classic groove is very firmly in place here – a great style that mixes jazz funk with a freer jamming style borrowed from Latin ... LP, Vinyl record album
