Big Sound (Groove Blues/Big Sound)

LP (Item 74462) Prestige, 1958 — Condition: Near Mint-
2LP Gatefold

A nice 2LP set that collects material recorded on January 3, 1958 – originally issued as 2 separate LPs, The Big Sound and Groove Blues, but collected here together in its entirety, along with a good set of notes! The album's classic Ammons, playing in a laidback open-ended blowing session, with other strong Prestige players – like Coltrane, Jerome Richardson, Paul Quinichette, Art Taylor, and Mal Waldron, who always seems to be the driving force between most Prestige sides like this. Titles include "Groove Blues", "Jug Handle", "Cheek To Cheek", "Blue Hymn", "The Real McCoy", and "That's All".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has light wear.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Prestige, Mid 50s. Very Good+
Ahhhh . . . The Jam Session years of Gene Ammons! This album was one of a number that Jug cut for Prestige during the mid 50s, all excellent examples of how perfectly the label's "blowing session" style could work when it wanted to. The set takes Ammons' tenor, and groups it with an ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jug Sessions
Mercury, Late 40s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
Early work from Gene Ammons – his obscure late 40s recordings for Mercury Records – mostly from the 78rpm years! Sidemen include Junior Mance, Albert Ammons, Israel Crosby, Gene Wright and lesser known Chicago locals like Wes Landers, Leo Blevins, Jess Miller and Ernest McDonald. As you' ... Prestige, 1960s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
A wonderful batch of mellow, laidback balladry by Gene Ammons. Like a lot of the two-fers issued by Milestone and Prestige in the 70s when they came under the Fantasy umbrella, this set collects sides from a couple of different sessions, Nice An' Cool and The Soulful Mood Of Gene Ammons in this ... Prestige, Early 50s. Very Good+
Nice nice album on Prestige, bringing together Jug's earlier sides in 2 different settings. The first batch has Ammons "battling" Sonny Stitt in a set of stuff that features hard twin tenors in the frontline, with the kind of cutting contests the two of them would perform live all over ... Moodsville, Early 60s. Very Good
Beautiful beautiful work from tenorist Gene Ammons – and an album that really demonstrates that during the 60s, one of Ammons' strongest suits was his work with a mellow tune or ballad! The tracks here are wonderfully laidback, but never sleepy – very soulful, and solidly put together ... LP, Vinyl record album

Up Tight!
Prestige, 1961. Very Good
A great little session by Jug – cut after the late 50s blowing session years, and with a much tighter sound that's very much in the pocket! Boss Tenor
Prestige, 1960. Very Good
A soul jazz classic from Gene Ammons – the kind of session that easy made him "boss" on tenor – with a tone and conception that few other players could touch! The set is done in a style that's laidback, but never too loose – bouncing along in that "with conga" ... LP, Vinyl record album

Prestige, 1969. Very Good 2LP Gatefold
Great US issue of 2 different albums that Webster recorded in Europe near the end of his life – Blow Ben Blow and For The Guv'nor. Sweet Soul
Prestige, Mid 60s. Very Good
One of her early trio albums, with a nice laidback, late-night, organ soul groove. She's backed by Earl May on bass and Roy Brooks on drums, and the tracks include "Sweet Slumber", "Happy Talk", and "I Hear A Rhapsody". LP, Vinyl record album

Yipes! The MJQ must have freaked out when they saw the title to this one – especially since the record doesn't feature them playing especially for lovers, it's just a collection of their excellent early work for Prestige. 2 different slices of work from Tal Farlow! First is the 1955 album Red Norvo With Strings – originally issued under Norvo's name – a "with strings" session with a difference! This one's not the sleepy orchestral jazz set that you'd expect. Instead, it's a cool modernist ... LP, Vinyl record album

Workin' & Steamin'
Prestige, 1974. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
2 classic Miles/Coltrane albums are compiled here on a nice double LP set with good extra notes on the sessions.
