Maestro

CD (Item 744538) Muse, 1980 — Condition: Used
$19.99 ...

CD

A very unusual set for pianist Cedar Walton – one that has him working with vocalist Abbey Lincoln, in a session that marks a high point for both of them at the time! Cedar's group on the set is in a very Eastern Rebellion mode – with Bob Berg on tenor, Billy Higgins on drums, and David Williams on bass – and Abbey joins the group on four of the album's eight tracks – the best of which are original numbers that feature a freshly inventive vocal style that really makes the album something special. Abbey sings some great lyrics to her originals "Castles" and "Not In Love" – as well as Cedar's excellent "The Maestro", a tune dedicated to the late Ellington. And the band grooves nicely on versions of Jobim's "Sabia", plus "Blue Monk" and "On The Trail".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We only use the grade "Used CD" for non-new CDs. This all-encompassing grade was chosen it because we only buy and offer used CDs in the best possible condition.

When you purchase a used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use, but if there are significant details or defects we will describe the item's condition (just like we do with LPs), so look for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details before ordering.

All of our used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. After you receive a used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly. If it does not, you can request a return for a full refund.

Sonny Stitt

Champ
Muse, 1974. Used
Great straight work from the legendary Sonny Stitt – recording here in a mode that's different than his funky sides of the time – and a lot more back to basics! The group's a quintet – as Sonny blows both tenor and alto, with help from Joe Newman on trumpet, Duke Jordan on piano, ... CD

Eddie Daniels

Brief Encounter
Muse, 1977. Used
A compelling 70s set from reedman Eddie Daniels – a lot darker than some of his smoother jazz sides to come! There's a feel here that's almost in the CTI camp, but a bit spacier overall – as Daniels' work on flutes, tenor, and clarinet comes into play nicely with Fender Rhodes and ... CD

Junior Cook

Something's Cookin
Muse, 1982. Used
A nice little cooker from Junior – with no pun on the artist or title intended! The album's one of Cook's few sets as a leader, and arguably has an even better focus than most of the rest – thanks to strong production from Cedar Walton, who's also backing Junior for the record with his ... CD

British pianist Stan Tracey recorded a famous album in the 60s, based upon a work by Dylan Thomas – and here, he revisits the poet again as inspiration for a jazz record – with results that are equally great as that classic from the past! Despite the title, the record's not entirely a ... CD

RCA (Spain), 1955. Used
During the mid 50s, RCA virtually had a lock on this sort of classic swing-based jazz session – and this nice groover by Joe Newman is a perfect example of the label's legacy in that field. The session features an octet with Joe, Al Cohn, Ernie Wilkins, Nat Pierce, and Freddie Greene – ... CD
