Jug & Dodo

LP (Item 73840) Prestige, 1962/Early 70s — Condition: Very Good+
2LP Gatefold
Just Sold Out!

LP, Vinyl record album

❔
The first-ever issue of material recorded in Chicago in 1962 – a rare session by pianist Dodo Marmarosa, one that was to be his last on earth! Dodo's working with a trio that includes Sam Jones on bass and Marshall Thompson on drums – in a sad, almost bluesy style that's a wonderful maturation of ideas he was expressing during his bop years, and which is similar to his last album on Argo. Ammons joins in on tenor sax for about half the tracks on the session, and the material is presented here with a good set of liner notes that opens up a good bit of history on Dodo. Titles include "Just Friends", "Georgia", "For You", "The Moody Blues", "Yardbird Suite", "Bluzarumba", and "The Very Thought Of You".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has ring wear, small top seam splits, some pen.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

The earliest days of a legendary jazz label – some of the first 78rpm material recorded by Prestige Records, all of it pretty darn great! Houston Person

Truth
Prestige, 1970. Very Good
One of Houston Person's first forays into the jazz funk sound that other Prestige Records players were picking up at the time – a sweet little set with some nicely extended tunes! Jack McDuff

Hot Barbeque
Prestige, 1966. Very Good
One of our all-time favorite albums from Brother Jack McDuff – not just for the cover (which is plenty appealing to us as BBQ fans!), but also for the tight, sharply focused grooves on the set – some of Jack's first really firey work on record! The combo here is great – with a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Red Garland

Halleloo Y'All
Prestige, 1963. Very Good+
Red's usual trio bag is given a bit of a soul jazz twist (or perhaps we should say "a bit more of a soul jazz twist" since Red's always pretty darn soulful!) – in this set of tracks that has a slight gospel piano sound to it, and which also features Red playing organ on one track! ... Gene Ammons

Got My Own
Prestige, 1973. Near Mint-
A more laidback set than usual from Ammons' early 70s stretch on Prestige – but a record that nicely gets back to that big-toned tenor sound he used often on ballads from earlier years! Cadet, 1968. Near Mint-
One of her grooviest records ever!
