Circle

LP (Item 73646) Contemporary, 1979 — Condition: Near Mint-

Lovely work from George Cables – one of the strongest piano stars to emerge from the west coast scene of the 70s, and one of the most soulful too! The album features a core trio of Cables on acoustic piano, plus Rufus Reid on bass and Eddie Gladden on drums – and they're joined on 2 tracks by Joe Farrell, who plays some wonderfully lyrical flute. One track features Cables on electric keys, plus sax by Ernie Watts – and titles include "The Phantom", "Circle", "Love Song", "Beyond Forever", and "Thank You Thank You".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(80s Fantasy pressing. Cover has light wear and a promo stamp.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Contemporary, 1987. Near Mint-
George Cables takes on the music of George Gershwin – but in a set that's way more than just the usual batch of songbook standards! Cables has that warm glow that always makes us feel like he's playing electric, even when he's acoustic, as on this session – kind of a fluid glide that's ... LP, Vinyl record album

An unexpected treasure – like so many of Art Farmer's later albums! The record is ostensibly a tribute to the music of Billy Strayhorn – which might make us expect some soporific Ellington cliches – but the session's really just a small group one, played by Art with a quintet ... Easy Living
Contemporary, 1985. Near Mint-
A great date from the later revival years of altoist Frank Morgan – thanks to a warm performance from the Cedar Walton trio! Sheesh, Howard Rumsey sure knew how to stick his name on a lot of records! (He must have been trying to give Norman Granz and Leonard Feather a run for their money!) Fortunately, most of them were also great – like this one, which features flute duets between Bob Cooper and either Bud Shank ... LP, Vinyl record album

Surprisingly nice stuff – especially considering that the album was one in a string of Previn piano sessions for Contemporary – all based around Broadway themes as part of the success of his My Fair Lady date with Shelly Manne! Tremendous work from Howard Rumsey's early Lighthouse group – and a great example of why they were such a great act at the time! One of the few cases in jazz where an oft-played classic still resonates with power!
