Blue Trombone

LP (Item 73580) Columbia, 1957 — Condition: Near Mint-
A great small group session from trombonist JJ Johnson – a record that sets him up with a crack rhythm section, then really lets him open up on his solos! The approach is a great change from some of the more tightly arranged Johnson albums for Columbia – and is a great reminder of the sharp, soulful hardbop style that first made folks take note of JJ during his early work for Blue Note and Prestige Records! The set cooks nicely – thanks to piano from Tommy Flanagan, bass from Paul Chambers, and drums from Max Roach – and titles include "Kev", "Blue Trombone (parts 1 & 2)", "100 Proof", and "What's New".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

JJ Johnson

First Place
Columbia, 1957. Very Good
JJ Johnson's always a cooker, but during the late 50s he cut some incredible records for the Columbia label – tight bop sessions that still stand as some of his best work! This album's one of them – a real smoker of a set that features Johnson's trombone as the only lead horn in a cool ... LP, Vinyl record album
Blue Note, 1953. Near Mint-
A great set that brings together early material that trombone giant JJ Johnson cut for Blue Note as a leader – sides that already mark his approach to the instrument as one of the most distinct of the time, and which pave the way for all the greatness that Johnson would bring to jazz in years ... Miles Davis

Sketches Of Spain
Columbia, 1960. Near Mint-
A beautiful collaboration between Miles Davis and the great Gil Evans – and perhaps the most perfectly realized of all their projects! The album's got a wonderfully unified feel – as it begins with long compositions that have a distinct Spanish-tinge (and not a Latin-tinge, which is an ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gerry Mulligan

What Is There To Say?
Columbia, 1959. Very Good+
A beautiful pairing of the baritone of Gerry Mulligan and the trumpet of Art Farmer – brought together wonderfully in this piano-less session that has both players effortlessly carving lines in the open space of the studio. Rhythm is by the team of Bill Crow on bass and Dave Bailey on drums ... LP, Vinyl record album

James Blood Ulmer

Odyssey
Columbia, 1983. Near Mint-
One of our favorite Ulmer records, probably because there's a nice groove running underneath most of the numbers, in a sort of post-Prime Time 80s out-funk sort of way. It never drops into a flat out back beat, but there's always some sense of time, while Ulmer's guitar and Charles Burnham's ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gerry Mulligan

Jeru
Columbia, 1962. Very Good+
A pretty great little album – and very different than Gerry Mulligan's regular sides from the time! The session was originally produced as part of the sessions for the short-lived Jazztime label in the early 60s – and was produced by Dave Bailey with a soulful undercurrent that's quite ... John Handy

Projections
Columbia, 1968. Very Good+
One of Handy's important mind-expanding sets from the late 60s – a classic album with his group that featured a young Michael White on violin and Mike Nock on piano. White's work on the album is especially striking – very different from many other players in jazz, using the instrument ... LP, Vinyl record album
Columbia, Early 40s. Very Good-
The birth of modern jazz guitar – seminal sides recorded by Charlie Christian, working in small group format with Benny Goodman, Lionel Hampton, Fletcher Henderson, and even a bit of Basie. A real 70s standout from guitarist Al Di Meola – and that's saying a lot, given the strength of most of his albums from the decade! The record's one that broke Al's talents out to so many different groups – yet never in a way that waters down his sound, nor dims his genius for a solo. ... LP, Vinyl record album

Duke Ellington

Ellington Uptown
Columbia, 1952. Very Good
One of Duke Ellington's standout sides for Columbia – a strong recording that revisits many of the best elements of his earlier work, and offers up some more sophisticated scoring for the 50s – thanks to extended track length in the LP generation! The tunes here are older ones, but ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jack McDuff

Honeydripper
Prestige, 1961. Very Good+
One of the records that put a young Brother Jack McDuff on the map – and a perfect example of the rougher R&B roots that first emerged in his early work on the Hammond! The session's got a much more down-n-dirty feel than some of McDuff's tighter 60s quartet work – and offers a ... LP, Vinyl record album
