LP, Vinyl record album

❔
While it's tough to think of a jazz player having "hits" – given the low sales of jazz albums, even in the 60s – it's still the case that Ammons' sound was so strong, and so soulful, he had plenty of fans in the crossover market for some of his bigger recordings. The album does a good job of bringing some of those soul jazz gems together – mostly tracks from his early 60s, pre-incarceration years at Prestige, but a few later cuts that get a bit funky. Titles include "Jungle Strut", "Seed Shack", "Exactly Like You", "Didn't We", "Angel Eyes", "Ca'Purange", and "Canadian Sunset".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Green label pressing. Cover has light wear.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Savoy, Late 40s/Early 50s. Very Good+
A nice collection of Gene Ammons' work that doesn't always get as well remembered as his sides for Prestige or Chess – a 1947 bop session for Savoy with Howard McGhee on trumpet, Leo Parker on baritone, Junior Mance on piano, Gene Wright on bass, and Chuck Williams on drums; and early 50s ... Gene Ammons

Early Visions
Chess, Late 40s/Early 50s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
24 tracks that perfectly illustrate all that was great about Gene Ammons in his early days – a set of singles and 78s recorded for Chess in the late 40s and early 50s, featuring players that include Tom Archia, Matthew Gee, Junior Mance, Sonny Stitt, and Bill Massey. Titles include "Do ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gene Ammons

Boss Tenor
Prestige, 1960. Very Good
A soul jazz classic from Gene Ammons – the kind of session that easy made him "boss" on tenor – with a tone and conception that few other players could touch! The set is done in a style that's laidback, but never too loose – bouncing along in that "with conga" ... LP, Vinyl record album
Prestige, 1958. Very Good-
A record that's virtually the blueprint for the sound of Hammond organ and tenor sax in soul jazz– the first of Eddie Lockjaw Davis' great run of cookbook albums for Prestige! The record features Lockjaw's gutsy tenor in a group alongside Jerome Richardson's lighter flute – both ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jon Eardley

Jon Eardley Seven
Prestige, 1956. Very Good
A rare session as a leader for trumpeter Jon Eardley – a strong 50s player in Gerry Mulligan's group, one with a tone that is both cool and modern, but also able to move deftly in bop circles! This set features a septet (as might be expected by the title) – with players that include ... LP, Vinyl record album

John Coltrane

Bahia (2LP set)
Prestige, 1957/1958. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
Not to be confused with the single LP Bahia, this 2LP set features tracks from that one – plus titles from Stardust, and the full album Cattin With Coltrane & Quinichette. The first LP features tracks with Trane blowing with the Red Garland Trio, plus one additional tune with the same ... LP, Vinyl record album

Billy Taylor

Touch Of Taylor
Prestige, 1955. Very Good+
A touch of Billy Taylor, but that's more than enough – as his trio here can pack plenty into just a very short space! The set's an early classic that features Billy with his legendary trio with bassist Earl May and drummer Percy Brice – a group who really transformed the sound of the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Elmo Hope

Meditations
Prestige, 1955. Very Good+
Beautiful trio work by Elmo Hope – one of his first sessions as a leader, and while still quite modern, also a record that's done with a warmer, mellower feel than some of his other work – as you might guess from the cover image and the Meditations title! The group on the set features ... LP, Vinyl record album

Red Garland

Halleloo Y'All
Prestige, 1963. Very Good-
Red's usual trio bag is given a bit of a soul jazz twist (or perhaps we should say "a bit more of a soul jazz twist" since Red's always pretty darn soulful!) – in this set of tracks that has a slight gospel piano sound to it, and which also features Red playing organ on one track! ... LP, Vinyl record album
Prestige, 1955. Very Good-
One of the nicest moments from Milt Jackson in the 50s – an open-ended blowing session cut with Miles Davis, in a mode that's even better than Jackson's work for Savoy at the time! The style is very much in the key Davis mode on Prestige – with Jackie McLean in the group on alto sax, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Herbie Mann & Bobby Jaspar

Flute Souffle
Prestige, 1957. Very Good+
A surprisingly great album – one that features Herbie and Bobby trading flutes and tenor, blowing long solos in a set that gives them plenty of room to work! The album only features four long tracks – "Let's March", "Tel Aviv", "Somewhere Else", and "C ... LP, Vinyl record album
Prestige, 1956. Very Good
One of the classic early Miles Davis & John Coltrane sessions for Prestige – a well-crafted quintet album that shows Miles finding a stronger voice than ever, and Coltrane beginning to emerge as a key force on his own! Backing is subtle and soulful – handled by the trio of Red ... LP, Vinyl record album
