Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Maynard Ferguson

Maynard Ferguson Octet
EmArcy, 1955. Very Good-
Maynard Ferguson's blowing full steam ahead here – working with an octet that's heavy on horn parts, but in a richly creative way! Ferguson nicely shows off some of his best influences from the 50s large group scene in LA – and gets some key help on the record from Bill Holman, who ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gerry Mulligan

Mainstream Of Jazz
EmArcy, 1956. Very Good+
Gerry Mulligan's still far from the mainstream of jazz on this sweet little set – a great date that expands nicely from the mellower styles of the Pacific Jazz years – expanding the group a bit, with some really great results! In addition to Mulligan's usual baritone sax, Gerry also ... LP, Vinyl record album

Paul Quinichette

Vice Pres (Trip reissue)
EmArcy, Early 50s. Very Good+
Some of the greatest work as a leader ever cut by tenorist Paul Quinichette – longtime Basie alum, and a key player who was the "Vice Pres" next to Lester Young's "Pres". The record is one of the best full-length albums by Quinichette from the early days, and combines ... LP, Vinyl record album

June Gardner

Bustin Out
EmArcy, Late 60s. Very Good+
A rollicking batch of 60s instrumentals, served up by drummer June Gardner – billed as Gentleman June on the cover! June's from New Orleans, but the groove here is more in a Memphis mode – vamping along with a larger group in a post-Ray Charles mode – featuring tighter soul ... LP, Vinyl record album

EmArcy/Mercury, Mid 50s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
First volume pulled together in the early 80s of Brownie's remarkable work with a smoking quintet that would record some of the finest bop sides issued on the Emarcy label. John Williams

John Williams Trio
EmArcy, 1955. Very Good
Don't get this John Williams confused with the bigger-name soundtrack composer of later years – because this set is pure piano jazz all the way through, played by an artist who shined briefly with Stan Getz in the mid 50s! Although little-known, Williams is a great link between bop and ... LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, 1962. Very Good+ Gatefold
A great live set recorded in 1962 with some of Cal's best players in the group – pianist Lonnie Hewitt and drummer John Rae, joined by bassist Freddie Schreiber. Ray Bryant

Slow Freight
Cadet, 1966. Very Good+
A killer album by soul jazz pianist Ray Bryant! The title track, "Slow Freight", is an amazing 10 minute groover that moves at a very slow pace (just like a freight train), and which features some very cool ad-lib talking by Paul Serrano – a pretty groovy touch that really adds a ...
