Wheelin (Dealers/Wheelin & Dealin)

LP (Item 73184) Prestige, 1957 — Condition: Very Good+
2LP
A 2LP set that expands on tunes originally issued on the Coltrane/Mal Waldron albums The Dealers and Wheelin & Dealin – both featuring material recorded in 1957, with Coltrane on tenor, and a rhythm section that features Waldron, Doug Watkins, and Art Taylor. The tracks are open-ended and very much in the blowing session mode that Waldron perfected for Prestige – solidly rhythmic, and quite cohesive, yet also very open-handed in the way that each player is allowed space for solo expression. Paul Quinichette and Frank Wess perform on 3 sides of the set, and the last one features Jackie McLean and Bill Hardman taking their place. Includes 2 takes each of "Wheelin" and "Dealin", plus "Blue Calypso", "Falling In Love With Love", "Robbin's Nest", and "Things Ain't What They Used To Be".  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Atlantic, Late 50s/Early 60s. Near Mint- Gatefold
A great complement to the classic Atlantic albums by Coltrane – material recorded during the same stretch, but never issued at the time! Reflections Volume 2
Chiaroscuro, 1965. Sealed
Rare live material – recorded in 1965 with a group that includes Elvin Jones, McCoy Tyner, and Jimmy Garrison. The album features two long versions of "One Up, One Down" – one a bit freer than the other – plus a mellower reading of Billy Eckstine's classic "I Want ... LP, Vinyl record album

John Coltrane

Lush Life
Prestige, 1957/1958. Very Good+
A beautiful little album from the young John Coltrane, and one that hides its strong sense of depth behind a familiar jazz standard used as a title! In some way, the record is almost experimental for the time – as side one features the tenor of Coltrane alongside just the bass of Earl May ... LP, Vinyl record album
Impulse, 1961/1977. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
Fantastic unreleased work from the famous 1961 recordings of John Coltrane at the Village Vanguard – every bit as wonderful as the material that was issued on the core album! John Coltrane returns to the Village Vanguard – but his sound here is a lot more far-reaching than a few years before! John Coltrane

Crescent
Impulse, 1964. Near Mint-
Sharp-edged John Coltrane at his best – a record that we'd rank right up there with Love Supreme, and which is a key transition point in Coltrane's musical ideas! There's a very strong edge to Coltrane's tone here – and even on the mellower ballads, he plays with a sound not always ... LP, Vinyl record album

John Coltrane

Bahia
Prestige, Late 50s. Near Mint-
An album issued in the years after John Coltrane left the Prestige Records label – but a set that includes some very compelling sounds from the early years, really showing the tenorist in a strongly spiritual transition! Coltrane plays tenor throughout, and the record also features the Red ... LP, Vinyl record album
Impulse, 1963. Very Good+ Gatefold
Soaring and soulful work from the legendary John Coltrane – a tremendous live set that's one of his best early 60s albums! The groove is open and free – filled with pulsating modal rhythms, and handled with a slightly more relaxed feeling than some of Trane's studio work from the same ... LP, Vinyl record album

David Fathead Newman

Concrete Jungle
Prestige, 1978. Near Mint-
Pretty laidback stuff from David Newman – but a nice record overall. The whole thing's arranged and produced by William Fischer, and it's got a soulful finish that works well with Newman's sweet-sounding horn. There's not really a lot of funk in the mix, but the album's got a solid approach ... LP, Vinyl record album

Barry Harris Sextet

Bull's Eye!
Prestige, 1968. Very Good
A sock-hard set of Detroit soul jazz that's one of Barry Harris' best albums of the 60s! The group on the record is a sextet – with Kenny Dorham on trumpet, Charles McPherson on tenor, and Pepper Adams on baritone – forging a much harder frontline than you'll hear on some of Barry's ...
