Path

LP (Item 73023) Marlin, 1978 — Condition: Near Mint-
Gatefold
One of percussionist Ralph MacDonald's best albums of the late 70s – and one of the few on his own, given how many other records he played on! The set's a complicated mix of jazz, soul, and a variety of rootsier elements – and MacDonald shows a lot of sides of his personality here – stretching out in the ambitious "The Path" suite, which takes up all of side one, then hitting some more laidback jazz funk on the shorter tracks on side two. "The Path" traces a wide development of percussion – from African styled drumming on the intro, to some tighter clubbier jazz funk by the Bamboo Steel Band on later passages. Side two features a great percussive jammer called "It Feels So Good" – done with almost a Latin Jazz feel, and some sweet electric piano – plus the tracks "Smoke Rings & Wine", "I Cross My Heart", and "If I'm Still Around Tomorrow".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Ralph MacDonald

Counterpoint
Marlin, 1979. Near Mint-
Maybe one of the most soul-based records ever from percussionist Ralph MacDonald – partly because Ralph does a bit of singing, in addition to playing the heavy congas on the cover! Yet the record's still got the core jazz vibe of his other sets from the late 70s – served up with an all- ... LP, Vinyl record album

Queen Samantha

Letter (Marlin)
Marlin, 1978. Near Mint-
Queen Samantha offer up a nice mix of modes here – taking on the Box Tops' classic oldie "The Letter", before launching into some originals of their own – all in the best longform disco mode of the TK Records family of labels at their height! The group's singers aren't listed ... LP, Vinyl record album

Voyage

Fly Away
Marlin, 1978. Sealed
The second US album from Euro disco outfit Voyage – a group who manage to bring in some nice progressive and jazzy elements to the mix! William Salter

It Is So Beautiful To Be
Marlin, 1977. Near Mint-
LP...$9.99 14.99
Sophisticated soul from William Salter – a lost treasure from the Ralph MacDonald camp at the end of the 70s, and a vocalist that we only know from this one obscure album! MacDonald produced the set with William Eaton – who also did the arrangements, as he did on some of Ralph's own ... LP, Vinyl record album

Tribe

Ethnic Stew
ABC, 1974. Very Good+
A great bit of funk from this obscure 70s combo – the first of their many good albums, and with a sound that's rougher and rawer than the others. The band's grooving in a pretty slow mode here – without the uptempo club tracks of later years – and they've got a style that's a mix ... LP, Vinyl record album

Shorty Long

Prime Of Shorty Long
SOUL, 1969. Near Mint-
A beautiful album from Shorty Long – issued shortly after his early death from drowning at the age of 29 – and an amazing document of the mighty soul powers he would have had in years to come! There's a depth here that Shorty never had before – a sense of power and righteousness ... LP, Vinyl record album

Irene Reid

Room For One More
Verve, 1965. Very Good+
Although Irene Reid later went on to make some recordings that had her in a more rootsy setting, this nice set from the mid 60's features her deep soul voice amidst classy jazz-based arrangements by Oliver Nelson. The record's got the feel of one of Nancy Wilson's classics for Capitol, with a mix ... LP, Vinyl record album

One of the nice moments from the days when David Axelrod was producing Lou Rawls! The record's a great mix of soul and tight LA production, and features the breakbeat cut "Fa Fa Fa Fa Fa (Sad Song)". Other nice ones include "Season Of The Witch", "It's You", "I ... LP, Vinyl record album

Big Fun
Solar, 1979. Very Good+
A definite bit of Big Fun from Shalamar – totally tight and very much at the top of their game – making the transition from disco modes to leaner 80s groove, thanks to lots of great production and songwriting help from Leon Sylvers! Sylvers was really emerging as one of the key forces ... LP, Vinyl record album
