Ray Charles (Up Front)

LP (Item 729831) Up Front, Mid/Late 70s — Condition: Near Mint-
...

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

ABC, 1962. Very Good
The second installment of one of Ray's greatest albums – and a landmark in the genre of country soul! As the title implies, Ray's singing a host of tunes best known from the country side of the spectrum – but he's working here with arrangements by LA jazzers Marty Paich and Gerald ... LP, Vinyl record album
Atlantic, Late 50s. Very Good
A collection of Ray's incredible work for Atlantic during the late 50s – a mixture of hard grooving R&B tunes and more jazz-based mellower numbers, all done in that stripped-down raw style he was using at the time, one that was a lot harder than his later work for ABC. Titles include ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ray Charles

Genius + Soul = Jazz
Impulse, 1960. Very Good+ Gatefold
A wonderful chapter in the career of Ray Charles – and a key album in helping raise his respect level a notch or two in the early 60s! We might argue with the mathematics in the title – or at least joke that Ray was using equations as titles years before Anthony Braxton – but you ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ray Charles

Sweet & Sour Tears
ABC, 1964. Very Good
Easily one of the best Ray Charles albums on ABC – if not one of the best Ray Charles albums of all-time. Ray's in his C&W mode here, but it's a bit more restrained than on other LPs, and is replaced here by a sophisticated style that works perfectly with his heartbreaking voice. Proof ... ABC, 1962. Very Good+
A classic! What seemed a silly idea at the time was true proof of Ray's genius, and the result was the most successful album of his career – and a bona-fide number one hit that rode the charts for years and years! Ray's voice works perfectly with the material, and thanks to soulful ... LP, Vinyl record album

Brenda & The Tabulations

Dry Your Eyes
Dionn, 1967. Very Good
Incredible early work from Brenda & The Tabulations – one of the best male/female soul groups of their era, yet one that's often sadly overlooked! Curtis Mayfield

Curtis
Curtom, 1970. Very Good+ Gatefold
A mindblowing solo set from Curtis Mayfield – a record that not only foregrounds all the subtle politics he'd been forging in the Impressions during the 60s – but one that also really has Mayfield exploding as a force to be reckoned with in the studio! The album's a personal ... LP, Vinyl record album

Albino Gorilla

Detroit 1984
Kama Sutra, 1970. Very Good+ Gatefold
Weird funky rock album by this obscure band on Kama Sutra. The music's pretty funky and instrumental at times, but at other times, there's sort of these bad soulful rock vocals. The best tracks on here are the minute-long interludes between songs. They're all pretty funky, and they have no vocals ... LP, Vinyl record album
Hi Records, 1972. Very Good+
Warm wonderfulness from the great Al Green – a record that may have a pale-looking cover, but a set that's one of Green's most deeply soulful albums ever!
