Heart & Soul

LP (Item 7292) SSS, 1969 — Condition: Very Good+
A lost southern soul classic – recorded by Johnny Adams in Nashville, and done in a great blend of country and soul styles! Johnny's career initially began in New Orleans, where he recorded a number of indie singles – but this was the record that really pushed his career into the limelight, and gave his deep down-homey vocals a perfect style in which to work! The set's got a really rich quality that reminds us of some of the lesser-known Hi Records work at the time – a mode that's willing to go past simple labels and chart soul conventions – and work in a mode that reaches out with a fresher approach that's really appealing. Titles include the hit single "Lonely Man", plus a bunch of other smokey little cuts that include "Losing Battle", "Real Live Living Hurtin' Man", "I Can't Be All Bad", and "Reconsider Me".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

My Sweet Summer Suite
20th Century, 1976. Very Good
A wonderful album by Barry White – a bit later than some of the early 70s hits, but one of his most satisfying records overall! Isaac Hayes

Joy
Enterprise, 1973. Very Good
One of the funkiest Isaac Hayes albums for Stax – thanks mostly to the extended title cut! The tune "Joy" is a monster – running for nearly 16 minutes long, and starting with a killer drum break on the intro – then full, proud, bad-stepping Isaac Hayes grooves ... LP, Vinyl record album

Average White Band

Average White Band
Atlantic, 1974. Very Good
AWB's first for Atlantic – and a nice slice of funk that proves that they can mix it up with the best groups of the 70s! Neptune, 1970. Very Good
Fantastic early O'Jays! The album's the first to feature the group meeting up with the Gamble/Huff team – a significant shift from their earlier work on Imperial, with a style that still retains all the vocal hardness of those days, but which makes a shift into a sweeter soaring soul groove! ... Thelonious Monk

Brilliant Corners
Riverside, 1956. Near Mint-
A brilliant title for this brilliant album from Thelonious Monk – a set that really has him coming back strongly in the second half of the 50s – with a new talent for arrangements that really goes past his previous work! Monk's piano and compositions are every bit as great as before ... LP, Vinyl record album

Quincy Jones

Smackwater Jack
A&M, 1971. Very Good+ Gatefold
A great bit of 70s electric work from Quincy – and probably his funkiest album ever!
