Although he's probably best remembered these days as the genius producer behind most of the great Memphis soul records on the Hi Records label, Willie Mitchell was also quite a big soul star in his day. He played lead trumpet on a huge amount of instrumental singles and LPs issued under his own name – records that came out on Hi in the years before and during his classic work with Al Green and Ann Peebles. This "best of" set features 20 of Willie's best moments – including some big singles, and some other more obscure numbers from LPs. Titles include "20 75", "The Crawl", "Percolatin", "Strawberry Soul", "My Babe", "Young People", "Poppin", "Up Hard", "Bum Daddy", and "Bad Eye".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible.

When you purchase a Used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use but if there are significant details or defects we will list them underneath the item — just like we do with LPs — so look there for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details.

All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

What can we say? Most of the biggest hits, and many of the very best tracks cut in the prime of Al Green's career – which is to say some of the very best Memphis soul ever recorded! It's just one of these Greatest Hits packages of pure, inarguable perfection – with "Call Me" ... CD
Hi Records/Fat Possum, 1972. Used
A damn great bit of work from the legendary Al Green – maybe one of his best records ever – and in fact, maybe one of greatest soul albums of all time! The set's got a style that's really genre-defining – not the previous southern soul of a few years before, but also not the ... CD

Lakeside

Rough Riders
Solar/Right Stuff, 1979. Used
Nothing rough about these riders – as the album's a sweet second effort from Lakeside – Ohio funk given a sweet LA glow, thanks to the Solar Records power duo of Leon Sylvers and Dick Griffey! The Midwest/Cali bridge is perfect here – as there's lots of raw roots given a tight ... CD
Hi Records/EMI, 1976. Used
Hi Records perfection from the mighty Al Green – slightly later than some of his key early hits, but a record that shows Green still taking fire on all burners! Production is by the team of Al and Willie Mitchell – in a mode that's slightly fuller and more updated than before, but ... CD

Lakeside

Fantastic Voyage
Solar/Right Stuff, 1980. Used
A crowning achievement from Lakeside – one of the key albums to link Ohio funk roots with a smoother LA groove – all served up in a way that had limitless influence for years to come! Bass is definitely at the head of these arrangements, but there's plenty of great guitar too – ... CD

Shalamar

Big Fun
Solar/Right Stuff (UK), 1979. Used
A definite bit of Big Fun from Shalamar – totally tight and very much at the top of their game – making the transition from disco modes to leaner 80s groove, thanks to lots of great production and songwriting help from Leon Sylvers! Sylvers was really emerging as one of the key forces ... CD
Casablanca, 1976. Used
An oft-overlooked gem from Parliament – released during the year 1976, and sometimes hidden between monster LPs like Funkentelechy and Mothership Connection – but every bit as great as those two classics! The album's got that tightened-up P-Funk sound that was working so perfectly at ... CD

Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes

Blue Notes & Ballads
Philadelphia International/Sony, Early 70s. Used
Sublime ballad work from Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes – material that easily represents the greatest side of their talents from the Philly International years! Although the group charted biggest with their groovers, we've always loved their mellower tunes best – and this CD is ... CD

Charlie Wilson

Just Charlie
Jive, 2010. Used
... CD
Columbia/FTG, 1980. Used
An overlooked killer from Brick – the group's fourth album, but every bit as tight and funkier as earlier sets! Brick's Atlanta-bred groove is very much in place here – that lean, mean approach to funk that made them a standout right from the get-go – almost setting the scene for ... CD

Naughty By Nature

Naughty By Nature
Tommy Boy, 1991. Used
Their first LP and a high water mark for the Flavor Unit. The thing that still gets us open on this debut is that Naughty By Nature managed to bridge the gap between commercially viable, radio friendly hip hop and street credibility, plus had tight enough rhymes and mic skills to please even the ...
