Woody Herman 1963 – Swingin'est Big Band Ever

LP (Item 72441) Philips, 1963 — Condition: Very Good+
Despite what you might think about some of Woody's big band contemporaries from the 40s, you've got to admit that Woody himself was always growing and changing as the decades went on – as this 1963 album will attest! Woody's in great form here – still working with a tight group of ensemble players, but also hitting a groovier sound that's more in keeping with the time of the material – pointing the way towards some of his sublime sides of the late 60s and early 70s with a subtle shift from swing to groove. You can hear that especially on some of the original tunes – like "Camel Walk", "Sig Ep", and "Tunin' In" – and the album also features nice versions of Horace Silver's "Sister Sadie" and Horace Parlan's "Blues For JP".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Klaus Doldinger

Dig Doldinger
Philips, 1963. Very Good+
Although he sucked monumentally during the 70s, when he was blowing his head off with his group Passport, Klaus Doldinger was actually a damn good soul jazz tenorist during the 60s – and he cut some great groovy LPs that were issued in the US, like this one from 1963.
